Haven’t heard of Girls on the Run? This program provides a safe and interactive way for girls to learn about healthy living which includes an introduction and education on important topics such as goal-setting, cooperation, healthy decision-making, and self-respect, while training for a 5K event. More than 1000 girls in Portland took part last spring. Here’s an overview of the 3rd to 5th Grade Program <https://www.girlsontherun.org/What-We-Do/3rd-5th-Grade-Program>
and of the Middle School Program <https://www.girlsontherun.org/What-We-Do/6th-8th-Grade-Program>. (There is a middle school team starting up at Tubman!)
The first step to bringing the program to your school is recruiting a site liaison, someone at the school who can help coordinate logistics at the beginning of the season. Sometimes it’s a parent, a class teacher, an administrator, a counselor, a PE teacher, an after-school program coordinator, etc. S/he would also help recruit coaches and participants. Would you be interested in this role? Or do you know people that might be a good site liaison? If so, contact me, Deborah Pleva, at deb....@girlsontherun.org<mailto:deb....@girlsontherun.org>. I have participated in Girls on the Run as the parent of a participant, as a coach, a as a site liaison this spring at Sabin. I also serve on the national board of directors as a volunteer. After experiencing the program and all it has to offer, I am excited to introduce it to as many girls as possible. My goal is to get all teams started at all four Tubman feeder schools. I would love to help you start a team at Irvington!
