TAG Games Family Summary
December 16, 2009

Dear Families,

Today was the second TAG Games meeting. We had a blast! Today we
warmed up with riddles and a maze. Then we discussed the history of
board games. How long do you think board games have been around? Ask
your child, then ask how we know. I think we were all surprised to
find out how long people have been playing board games. We also talked
about how games spread around the world before there were airplanes
and post offices to get them from one place to another and why there
might be different versions of the same game. We even compared ancient
board games to modern versions. You might ask your child to explain
these ideas by using the example of Mancala. Our group game this month
was Cranium Family Fun. Just like in Cranium, we acted out, drew,
sculpted, and deciphered clues while racing around the game board.

Some ways you can continue the fun at home:

• Create a board game on your own. For part of our lesson, we compared
ancient board games to modern board games. We found that sometimes
board games can be played by creating them with what you have
available. Ask your child how you could play Mancala without a game
board. What could you use instead? What could you use for pieces? Take
this one step further and try out some of their suggestions using
things around the house or in the yard.
• Make up new rules. Do you have special rules for games that you play
at home? Do you put all taxes and fees under “Free Parking” when you
play Monopoly? Once a game has been won, do you continue playing so
that every one has a chance to finish the game? What other special
rules do you have when you play games? How is this similar to the
different versions of games, such as Mancala, that we talked about
today?
• Play a game together! Talk about the game. How old do you think the
game is? Why? Where do you think it came from? Is this game similar to
other games you’ve played? How? How is it different? If you were to
change something about the game, what would it be? Try playing with
these changes and see what happens!
• Read a book together that has a mystery to solve. One that I really
enjoy is The Eleventh Hour by Graeme Base. There are riddles to solve
and hidden mice to find while you solve the mystery of who took the
birthday feast.

Today was a lot of fun! I look forward to our next meeting on
Wednesday, January 20, 2009.
