TAG/HS Redesign parent-led workshop this Thursday, November 19, 2009,
7:30-8:30pm Sabin School library

Where does TAG intersect HS Redesign?

To date, there has been no mention of specific special populations of
students in the HS Redesign, including TAG students. Inquiries by the
TAG Advisory Council and concerned parents led to discussions on
November 9 with Pat Thompson, Principal on Special Assignment -- TAG,
Jenny Villano, Educations Options (including ACCESS) and John Wilhelmi,
lead HS system redesign team.

What we learned:

* The HS Redesign team is interested in hearing from TAG Parents
* There will be a HS Redesign meeting specifically for TAG Parents
(at our request)
* We will have the opportunity to present information about the
nature and needs TAG students at this meeting
* The current understanding is that TAG student needs, including
ACCESS students, will be met by the Community Comprehensive High
Schools (CCHS) through regular course offerings with the potential
for some support in 9^th grade
* The ACCESS at Grant program will be dissolved.
* HS Cluster Meetings will begin this week:

What we thought:

* That although the CCHS plan offers consistent course offerings
across PPS, it does not address the rate and level of our most
academically talented students in core classes, nor does it have
enough high level courses to meet the needs of most ACCESS students
* That there are several options that could fit into the PPS HS Plan
that could meet the needs of TAG students
* That we need the sharp minds of our TAG Parents and students to
clarify those options and flesh them out.

Therefore:

We invite you, the TAG families, to attend a fast-paced
parent-led workshop on Thursday, November 19, 7:30 pm -- 8:30 in the
Sabin school library.

Agenda:

1. Introduction
2. Brief overview of PPS HS redesign plan (if you've not seen this,
please familiarize yourself at
http://www.pps.k12.or.us/departments/high-school-system/797.htm )
3. A glimpse of PPS priorities and pressures
4. Development of list of TAG student needs
5. Intersection of PPS and TAG
6. Explore HS Options in small groups
7. Groups report back to the body
8. Next Steps

Thanks,
Allison Abell
