*TAG & High School Redesign *
Parent meeting: Tues, Dec 1st
6:30 @ Sabin Elementary auditorium
on NE 18th north of Fremont
HISTORY: TAG/HS Redesign parent-led workshop was held last Thursday,
November 19th. The topic was "Where does TAG intersect HS Redesign"? The
concern was that there was no mention of specific special populations in
the District's current proposals. A meeting with district TAG staff
occurred earlier in November, at which time the parents were told that
the district is interested in hearing from them and they agreed to meet
to discuss TAG needs with parents in the near future, including a
presentation by parents on the needs of gifted learners.
The meeting last week went well, focusing on understanding the
district's redesign process and starting to prepare a presentation that
is based on the district's goals and policies.
*Tuesday's meeting will be a follow-up meeting* to discuss the
presentation of TAG needs in the high schools and *specific
recommendations* for TAG kids.
We need the sharp minds and experiences of our TAG Parents *and
students* to clarify those options and flesh them out. Bring any
concerns that you want addressed.
MORE BACKGROUND: The district's current understanding is that TAG
student needs, including ACCESS students, will be met by the Community
Comprehensive High Schools (CCHS) through regular course offerings with
the potential for some support in 9^th grade. The ACCESS at Grant
program will be dissolved.
We suggest that although the CCHS plan offers consistent course
offerings across PPS, it does not address the rate and level of our most
academically talented students in core classes, nor does it have enough
high level courses to meet the needs of most ACCESS students; and that
there are several options that could fit into the PPS HS Plan that could
meet the needs of TAG students.
