We have reached another important juncture for the "badminton in Irvine" project.
Please come to Irvine City Hall on the evening of 9-12-23 (next Tuesday night at approximately 7-9 p.m. as item 5.1 may take a long time to conclude) to support the "Badminton in Irvine" volunteer group. We and some residents will present and request the city council to direct the city staff to design a 2-story gym where 1 level will be dedicated to 16 modern badminton courts. This way, badminton will always have a permanent home in Irvine for the next 100 years.
City Council agenda on 9-12-23:https://irvine.granicus.com/GeneratedAgendaViewer.php?view_id=68&event_id=2261item 6.1 is the item that concerns us.
AGREEMENT WITH PERKINS EASTMAN FOR DESIGN SERVICES TO DEVELOP A GYMNASIUM AT COLONEL BILL BARBER MARINE CORPS MEMORIAL PARK
ACTION: Award and authorize the City Manager to execute a contract for a not-to-exceed amount of $3,274,600 to Perkins Eastman for Design and Construction Management Support Services for the Colonel Bill Barber Marine Corps Memorial Park Gymnasium Project.
The current logistical plan is to dial into the city council meeting via zoom (or LIVESTREAMED ONLINE AT
CITYOFIRVINE.ORG/ICTV) and make our trip to city hall when agenda item 5.1 discussions begin. We do not need more speakers, but your attendance will lend moral support and show the city council how many residents wants badminton in Irvine.
Staff report on item 6.1

The land area is only 45K sq ft. A gym area of 32K sq ft will accommodate 4 basketball courts on the 1st floor and we can have 16-badminton courts on the 2nd floor.
Together we can build a permanent home for badminton in Irvine.
