Badminton in Irvine: Project update. The city council voted 5-0 to support modern dedicated badminton courts at the upcoming BBMP gym.

Project update 9-13-23:

The volunteer team was successful in making an argument to the city council and the amended motion passed with unanimous decision.  Thank you everyone who came to support this project and provided e-comments to the city council.

We want to thank Mayor Farrah Khan for making the motion for an amendment to the design to a 2-story gym with 1 story dedicated for badminton courts.  We also want to thank Vice-mayor Tammy Kim who seconded the motion.  Lastly,  we want to thank Council Member Mike Caroll for his robust argument to the city staff for dedicated badminton courts.  We hope council member Agran and Treseder will continue to support this badminton project.

We will follow-up with the city staff to ensure the dedicated badminton court floor is designed to modern badminton standards.  We are hoping for a gym area that will accommodate a total of 16 badminton courts.  We will propose 14 court to have non-slip mat courts and 2 courts exposed to the hardwood surface to accommodate wheelchair badminton.  We believe it's important for badminton to be inclusive to everyone abled or disabled.

This project for the design and construction support services was awarded to Perkins Eastman for he amount of $3.27M.
