to Badminton In Irvine

Thank you to everyone who came out to speak tonight and to support those who spoke. We also want to thank everyone who took the time to submit written e-comments.

It was clear that the Community Services Commission heard the badminton community loud and clear.

However, the Commission chose not to vote on today’s proposal, citing the need for additional time—both to consult with other community members and to further review the City staff’s proposal.

It’s important to note that the badminton community was not formally consulted either but we showed up, we spoke, and we made our voices heard.

Unfortunately, this means we may need to go through this process again in a few weeks.

In the meantime, we will continue engaging with City staff to advocate for more equitable pricing—specifically, adjusting Category C and B fees from $40 and $30 down to $30 and $25.

The City’s Director of Community Services clarified tonight that all Irvine residents would pay the Category B rate, currently set at $30. We continue to believe this should be $25, consistent with how the City prices the multi-sport courts.

Our hope is that the City will agree with our proposal, so that at the next meeting, the community can simply show up in support of a proposal that reflects both fairness and accessibility.
