Nothing will ever beat Lucky Boy as I remember it.

Lucky Boy was probably not as good as I remember it, but it was the best.

I'm with you, Weldon. Lucky Boy burgers were the best!  Perhaps the reason it wasn't on the list was because it isn't there any more, and it looks like the others are still in business. I remember that almost glossy top bun on the burgers, and if I recall correctly,  they were wrapped in white paper.  The location I remember was the one that was near the intersection of Dyer and Pershing, at least I think that is where it was. I think Lucky Boy was a local operation with six to ten locations around El Paso.  I also think they closed down many years ago.

Amen to that.  I just wish that whoever owned the franchises here would bring them back.  If I remember correctly there was one on Dyer near Sunrise and one on Montana by what is now the N.S. Freeway and a 3rd one by Fox Plaza. I'm sure there were others here but I can't remember where they were.   Bill

Speaking of food....does anybody remember that German restaurant in Sunrise shopping center?  I remember how good those weiners were that they cooked outside on a grill every Saturday.  If anybody knows what kind of meat they used (I think they were Bratwurst).   So yummy!!!!

Why didn't Charcoaler make the hamburger list????

The only German restaurant I remember was the one by Chelmont Shopping center, on Montana. In fact, Terrill took me there for our dinner before Irvin in Orbit. As for hamburgers, I think the Charcoaler has really gone downhill. I hate to say that, as it is owned by a friend of ours. It is interesting that the original owner, Robert Cox, lived in OKC before going to El Paso. There is a restaurant here called The Charcoal Oven, and Mr. Cox patterned the Charcoaler after the Charcoal Oven, from the type of drive through to the menu. If we get a hankering for a good Charcoaler burger, we just head to the Charcoal Oven here. Mr.  Cox's brother in law owned the CharBurg (just like the Charcoaler) that was out on Montana, just beyond Hawkins Rd. That one eventually closed, leaving the one on Mesa as the only one. Then, for some reason, it was moved to just up the road on Mesa, closer to the Coronado area. Mr. Cox's son owned and operated it, but it has been a long time since we've been there, so he might not even own it now. We always loved the beautifully manicured lawn and flowers as you drove around, but the drought has obviously taken its toll on the landscaping. Sweet memories!! Betty

You can go to charcoalerdrivein.com to see their story! We used to go to church with the Cox family and Bobby, the current owner, was a groomsman in our wedding. Lloyd, do you ever go to the Charcoal Oven here in OKC? Betty

I thought this Burger Joints email had dropped off the face of the earth.  I sent in back in April.  My favorite burger in El Paso while attending UTEP was the Charcoaler but that was back in 1969 to 1973 which is a long time ago now.  I now like to have a What A Burger whenever I am in Texas.  I miss them from when I lived in Sweetwater and Dallas, Texas.  I was able to get them when i lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  There is one out by the Cottonwood Mall on the west side of the river where I lived.  Now that I am living in Las Vegas, Nevada again I have plugged back into the burgers that i liked when I was living in Orange County, California which are In and Out Burger and Tommy Burger.  The In and Out Burger is known for their freshness and Tommy Burger is known for putting chili on their burgers and cheese fries. Dan  PS  There was a really good German restaurant across from Beaumont Army Hospital back when I lived in El Paso from 1980 to 1990 but I noticed that it was no longer there when I was back in El Paso for a funeral in Spring of 2012.  Looking forward to our 50th class reunion!
