Do any of you remember the opening of "The Sound of Music" in El Paso? I remember going to the Pershing Theater to see it. There were those red velvet tubes strung between metal holders to help guide the lines, which went all the way around the building and up the street. That was one of the last movies, I think, that actually had an intermission. What a great movie it was! I hope you all enjoy seeing the photos of the original cast. Too bad that Christopher Plummer is no longer living. He was so good as the captain. Not long after Terrill and I moved to Oklahoma, we went to Tulsa to hear the real Maria Von Trapp. I must say, she didn't look nearly as pretty as Julie Andrews, but it was delightful to hear her share her story and how the Lord had taken care of them through all of that time. Some of their great grandchildren are singing together now. They appeared on a recent episode of "18 Kids" on TLC. Betty

"The Sound of Music" cast:

40 Yrs Later: The 7 Children In 'The Sound of Music'
'The Sound of Music' won the Academy Award for Best Picture of 1965 and is one of the most popular musicals ever produced.

Remember the 7 children of the Trapp family?

They were having a reunion after 40 years
and all were looking healthy and amazingly well...

NOW CURRENTLY...

It wouldn't be funny if it weren't so true... Julie Andrews turned 69 and to commemorate her 69th birthday on October 1, actress/vocalist Julie Andrews made a special appearance at
Manhattan  Radio City Music Hall for the benefit of the AARP.  One of the musical numbers she performed was "My Favorite Things" from the legendary movie "The Sound Of Music."

Here are the actual lyrics she used:

Maalox and nose drops and needles for knitting,
Walkers and handrails and new dental fittings,
Bundles of magazines tied up in string,
These are a few of my favorite things.
Cadillac's and cataracts, and hearing aids and glasses,
Polident and Fixodent and false teeth in glasses,
Pacemakers, golf carts and porches with swings,
These are a few of my favorite things..
When the pipes leak, When the bones creak,
When the knees go bad,
I simply remember my favorite things,
And then I don't feel so bad.
Hot tea and crumpets and corn pads for bunions,
No spicy hot food or food cooked with onions,
Bathrobes and heating pads and hot meals they bring,
These are a few of my favorite things.
Back pains, confused brains, and no need for sinnin',
Thin bones and fractures and hair that is thinnin',
And we won't mention our short, shrunken frames,
When we remember our favorite things.
When the joints ache, When the hips break,
When the eyes grow dim,
Then I remember the great life I've had,
And then I don't feel so bad.

Ms. Andrews received a standing ovation from the crowd that lasted over four minutes and repeated encores.  Please share Ms. Andrews' clever wit  and humor with others who would appreciate it.

"In my opinion, this was one of the best movies ever made, no filthy langue, no bed hoping, just good clean entertainment."

Ha! Ha! You know, they still do a live outdoor production of Oklahoma every summer up near Tulsa. They have a real surrey with fringe on top, and real horses are also used. It's a great production. Betty

I dunno. I got that from an old Dave Barry column -- "Mr. Language Person", I think -- and thought it was wonderfully absurd.

You sure get some cool jobs!

Hello.................Say - Ed--You have to be as good as those guys for them to get you up there with them . I just got off of the net , I listened to both of those guys . Now that I like . Some years ago I realized that the kids today who play in bands , play their instruments -but they don't make music ( to me ) .      RAY- I sure am glad to see that the hair cut didn't cut into your creativity .

Yeah.  And “Let Me Love You Tonight.”  (there’s a billion stars in the sky)

Saw them in a small venue two weeks ago.  Outstanding.

Have you ever been to Dosey Doe on I-45, Ed?

There's a song on the new Bob Dylan album called "If You Ever Go To Houston." You'll probably be hearing it a lot.

Ed,

My husband became an avid fan of PPL in the early ‘70s and I became one by osmosis after we got married.  We loved “Bustin’ Out”, “If The Shoe Fits” and “Two Lane Highway.”  We were given a movie camera and lots of film as a wedding gift in ’75 and we would shoot hours of film, featuring friends and family, and play it back for entertainment to the songs on those three albums (pre-children, pre-responsibilities, great fun).

Vince Gill didn’t come along until later—I think he was  responsible for  “Let Me Love You Tonight” in the late ‘70s (maybe early ‘80s) but they gave him verbal credit for his contributions to their music.

Thanks for posting the pictures.  Michael Martin Murphy was at Dosey Doe a week or so ago but we couldn’t make it.  It’s a great place.

Ed,

I should have looked it up before I emailed about Pure Prairie League.  Vince Gill joined the group in ’76.  This was after our favorite albums were made, but earlier than I thought.  So most of the older stuff we listened to didn’t involve him.  I’m sure his name helped sell some of their earlier stuff later, though!

As far as Musicals go, these are all great classic, but I'd take "Paint Your Wagon"
over all

It's great fun, but someone should tell you ahead of time that Clint
Eastwood's singing will make your Coke come out your nose.
