A friend was asking for pictures of El Paso back in the day, and I found these by way of a
google image search. Note the shadow of the Sunrise spire in the foreground. *sigh*

Wow, Swanky Franky next to the Del Norte Drive-In Theater on Dyer Street!  I saw many movies there.  Off to the left should be Sorrento's Italian Restaurant.

Thanks Ray!

Thanks for sharing those, Ray.  We were in that Rexall Drugstore all the time, and, like Pat, saw lots of movies at the Del Norte Drive-In…….“The Shaggy Dog” comes to mind.

I bought a lot of ten cent comic books and five cent fountain Cokes at that drug store.

Those might not have been the happiest days of my life, but they gave me some of my fondest memories.

When the Baskin-Robbins opened across the street from Sunrise (I forgot the name of the street), cones with one scoop cost 13 cents.

hmmm trying to think of a way to tastefully use the words of shaggy ----dog-----drive in- in a sentence & then realized just the consideration would disqualify the concept...... sigh ---it's hard to be an aging tasteless insensitive. i re read it too.... insensitive is a noun not an adjective.

A friend of mine and I would each get 50 cents, ride the bus to and from Sunrise, and get an ice cream cone while we were there.  We used to call it "31 Flavors".  Licorice was my favorite flavor.  It was grey!  They discontinued it years ago.

The first left off of Tetons was Guadalupe. The first right off of Guadalupe was Sierra Madre. The next street was Chisos Lane. That's where we lived. Walking to Food Mart/Piggly Wiggly for a 89 cent gallon of milk was quick and normal.

Going where the Southern meets the Yellow Dog?

okay... it's an obscure W.C. Handy thing -- plus I didn't do it in dialect which makes it unrecognizable anyway...

Many times we would pick up a pizza at Swanky Franky and take it to the drive-in.  Thanks for those pics.  Does anyone remember the Big 8 grocery store on the corner of Dyer and Hercules?

Thanks for the memories.  I miss the beautiful sky and Mt. Franklin most.  I worked at Zales in Sunrise Center and walked both directions between there and home.   I'd rush to get home in time to barely make it to Irvin's basketball games.

My family lived in the trailer park at the Southeast corner of Dyer and Hercules when we arrived in
El Paso from Camp Chaffee in 1952. I remember Pam Wimsatt too. She was the IIO Queen in 1967.

Keith—I wasn’t in El Paso when that happened, but I remember when the roof blew off of David Doyle’s house!  Susie

I remember going to one of those traveling carnivals in the parking lot of Sunrise Center. My brother and my stepbrothers rode one of the rides where you stand strapped in and the thing went round and round while one side would rise up. At its highest point, several of the light bulbs exploded, sending glass fragments around. There were 3 kids who had cuts, but nothing severe. It sure had everyone freaking out, though. Betty
