An energy efficient home uses less energy and natural resources than
other homes. These homes are an environmentally friendly option and
are great for people that are concerned about the environment. Such
homes can be new houses or older buildings; it just depends on the
amount of work that has been put in for remodels or redesigns.
Older homes usually need to be remodeled, redesigned or renovated in
order to become energy efficient. Popular energy efficient changes
include replacing appliances and adding new energy sources.
New appliances are often energy star appliances. Energy star
appliances are certified to use a small amount of energy. They also
have minimal to no pollutants released into the air. If an energy star
appliance is one that uses water, it uses the least amount of water
possible.
The energy star label is not confined to appliances. The Environmental
Protection Agency and the United States Department of Energy also use
the label to certify other household items. Some of these items
include: heating elements, air conditioners, air cleaners and
dehumidifiers. Every item that boasts the energy star label is
environmentally friendly.
But energy star appliances are not the only aspect of an
environmentally friendly and energy efficient home. Homeowners often
turn to tapping into renewable resources in order to create energy
efficiency, and the most used resource is definitely the sun.
Solar energy can be used for many things in a home. Panels are most
often placed on the roof of the home in order to collect the best and
strongest amount of sunlight. This energy is then used in the home as
electricity. Homes can be partially or fully powered with the use of
solar panels.
While solar panels are great for creating an alternative source of
energy, they are not the only element in an energy efficient home.
Other popular elements include energy efficient light bulbs and low
flow water faucets.
Energy efficient light bulbs are called compact fluorescent light
bulbs or CFLs. These light bulbs are known to use less electricity
than other light bulbs. In fact, they use seventy five percent less
electricity than regular light bulbs. They are a great addition to any
home that is energy efficient.
Another great way to save energy and natural resources is to save
water. In a home, saving water often means using low flow devices. Low
flow devices can be placed on sinks and showers. They make every
faucet use the smallest amount of water possible.
Besides light bulbs and low flow water devices, there are other steps
that a homeowner needs to take in order to save energy. For example,
air conditioners, furnaces and thermostats should always be kept at
good levels year round. Windows and doors should also be sealed and
caulked properly. This prevents drafts and air from escaping or
entering into the home, and together with other elements will ensure
an energy efficient building, space and home.
