Yes, we are having an autocross this month!
It will be this Sunday, July 17th, up in the cool air of Deer Valley.
Much thanks to Diane Johnstone for making all the contacts to get us
this lot.

All usual times for check-in, tech, etc. will be 1/2 hour later to
allow everyone to make the trip.

I've enclosed some directions for those of you who have not been to
the area before.
Bear with me as I pulled these from Google maps, so I hope they are
understandable....

Coming from the Salt Lake Valley, take I-80 toward Cheyenne, and exit
at Kimball Junction.
Turn right at the top of the ramp toward Park City, Highway 224.

Stay on Hwy. 224 as if you were going into Park City.

At the stoplight with the Squatters restaurant, bear to the right to
go on Park Ave. (still Hwy 224).

Turn left at the intersection of Deer Valley Drive (also still Hwy.
224) (Jans Mountain Outfitters is on this corner)

Follow Deer Valley Dr. to the roundabout, and go 3/4 of the way around
and continue on Deer Valley Dr.

At the intersection with the Keller Williams real estate office, stay
to the right, and Deer Valley Dr. becomes Deer Valley Dr. South.

As you continue on D.V.D. south, you will see the Snow Park Lodge.
Stay on the road, and it will curve to the north and become Deer
Valley Dr. east.

You will have the parking lots on your left. Go past 1,2,3, and 4. We
will be in the large lots at the end (5 & 6), last lots before the
ponds.

Totally confused? Hope not. If you need help, I will have my cell
phone with me, so feel free to call 801-647-1315, and I'll try to
guide you in.

As always, anyone coming early to help set up will be hugely
appreciated.

Hope to see a big turnout!

Cheers, Richard Aupperle Associate Autocross chair

The tires on my Cayman S are kinda old, but I'd still like to come and meet some fellow porsche owners. Can I bring my BMW instead?

Richard

For those of us who have not been to the autocross before what is the
normal schedule? Live in Park City and would like to come and attend.

Thanks,

Chris

Just how old are we talking? If they are not cording and you feel
safe enough driving with them on the road up there they will be fine
for the autox. Autox does not put to much wear on street tires so
unless its an issue of safety getting to and from the event i say
bring the Cayman, i would love to take a look at it!

If there is a highway saefty issue though BMWs are great cars to bring
too.

We really need to come up with a new layout for the autocross page,
the schedule is burried in with the rules at

http://int.pca.org/AX/rules.htm

however the rules page is also outdated and needs some corrections.

Normally you would show up between 8 and 9 though its always great if
you can get there earlier and help with course setup, plus you get
more time to get a feel for the course.

Our website is slowly but surely getting updated... Unfortunately there is nothing on the calendar tomorrow that said autocross much less location directions and time. This is when I checked last week.

Where in SLC can we get ethanol free gas?  The 10% ethanol gas at most stations gives me 10% less gas mileage so I have to go to the gas station more often and it gives about 10% less power.  Also it can be corrosive over time and is especially unfavorable in the cars that aren't driven as often.

thx,

Carl C

Thanks David,

Seriously?  There is only one station in SLC according to your website and, based on your email signature you might be someone who should know so I believe you.  This is not good news for us.

Anyone else?

Carl

I think that there is a station on Wasatch Blvd in front of the Grocery store about 3900 south that sells ethanol free fuel.  I think it is a sinclair.  Ed, can you confirm?

The Sinclair can no longer get ethanol free gas.

Yes, the Olympus Sinclair used to have a large sign indicating they were alcohol free and proud of it but I'm afraid, as
David pointed out, there is enormous behind-the-scene pressure to put alcohol in gas and they have succumbed.

Susan sent me an e-mail, don't know if everyone was copied or not, saying that Shell was ethanol free but I think some else suggested that a while ago and when I checked it was, unfortunately, not so.   Maybe I'll check again.

Meanwhile this is a bummer for our cars and, as David alludes, a real bummer from the standpoint of our tax dollars through corn subsidies, as well as to the environment it claims to benefit.  The bottom line is that the corn industry is unbelievably powerful.

I continue to be on the lookout.  It sounds like the Conoco by East High is ethanol free and the prices are good, and certainly better than other fuels when you factor in the improved gas mileage that real gas gets.

As a side note, you may try a few motor cycle shops, like Caesar's in midvale, as they used to have 100 octane fuel that may or may not be ethanol free.

Also, you could try a cut (50/50) of AVGAS (aircraft fuel) and typical no-lead gasoline to see if improves your performance, but I would check with your local mechanic to make sure there are no undue deposits left around or if your engine runs too hot.

Thanks,

Paul Mora

Pretty sure it is everywhere now.  I have been looking for stations ever since they started adding the crap and I don't know of anywhere that is ethanol free anymore.   I have checked various websites and every station that was listed ethanol free has it now.   I have been meaning to check out at RMR and Miller and see if the 91 they get out there is tainted as well.  Anyone know about this?

The ethanol is just horrible all around, gas mileage and power dropped on all my cars new and old.  Head temps went up on my 914s and i had to re-tune them to get them to run decently. The mixture seems to be inconsistent between stations too with some having more then others, with a wideband O2 sensor you can actually see the effects of gas from different stations.  Older cars (like 914s) with lots of rubber fuel line need to replace it all with the newer expensive stuff or risk their cars burning to the ground when the ethanol eats through the lines.

Problem with letting anything sit with the gas in the tank is that the moisture in the air causes the ethanol to separate from the gas, then when you try to start the motor it sucks in the ethanol/water mix and wont run.  I have read about guys mixing water into gas on purpose to drop the ethanol out and then siphoning off the pure gas, but you would probably have to be crazy to attempt this for anything bigger then a lawn mower.

If anyone can confirm a clean station please let me know.

-James

Craig at Craig's Service Center, 1300 S 900 E, says his gasoline is
sans ethanol. And he has 92 octane premium at the pump.

In 2009 you could get 100 octane unleaded fuel (and other octanes both
unleaded and leaded) at Jensens Oil, 4800 S Redwood Rd. I haven't been
there since.

thanks for the follow up.

woohoo!  what do you know?  and 92 octane.   i gassed up there the other day and didn't see any of those conspiratory "10% ethanol" stickers anywhere.  apparently it's Conoco fuel.  But it's 1300 East 900 South, not the other way.  it's the southeast corner of East High on 13th east.   The signs say Craigs Service Center. pretty sad that it's one of the only places left but maybe that can change.

maybe we should have p-car morning there one of these weekends and then go to Tulie's for coffee/pastries.  we could call the Tribune for a photo shoot/story about how it's good for your car, it's good for the environment, what a concept.  the only people who won't like it are the corn syndicate folks.
