After many months of discussion, reconciliation, and prayer among the staff and leadership of the church, Ron Johnson, the Founding Pastor of Pathways Church, announced his resignation effective August 31, 2009 at all the church services this past Sunday. We are grateful to Ron and Kim for their 16 years of service, leadership and sacrifice to our community that helped bring us to where we are today. Ron's energy and wisdom will be missed by all of us. We pray that God's vision for the next phase of Ron and Kim's journey will become clear in the coming weeks and months, and we will support them in whatever God leads them to do.
This decision did not come quickly or easily for us. The past year has been difficult for Ron, the elders and the staff. As Pathways has grown, we have evolved into a more complex organization with three sites and three neighborhood pastors. As the organization has evolved, the leadership needs have changed and it became clear that the role of Lead Pastor was also changing. We have spent over 6 months in prayer and conversation with Ron to find a new role that would best fit his gifts and passions. In this dialogue, we have come to the conclusion a lesser or significantly different role for him did not appeal to any of us, including Ron.
We apologize for the length of time this decision has taken. We regret the fact that rumors and innuendo surfaced in the interim and we want to reiterate that nothing immoral and unsavory is behind this decision. Through this very difficult process, we have put the needs of the church above any individual needs and we believe that we have honored God with our words and with our actions.
Thank you for your continued support during this season of change. Through this process, we have grown in our dependence on God to direct our future. We all believe that through the pain and difficultly God has led us to this point of clarity. We are confident that God will continue to lead our next steps and be the protector of our future. As we continue through this transition, Susie, Gil, Mark Miller, and Dave Messerve will serve as the teaching team at Wash Park.
Over the next several weeks we will be reconfiguring and rebuilding the elder board to include representation from each of the sites. In the coming weeks, elder candidates will be nominated, interviewed, selected, and presented to the church for confirmation.
Although the past months have been difficult, God has continued to bless Pathways. Each week we hear new stories of God moving in people's lives through being a part of the Pathways community. Each week we have new people in our services who love what they experience and the people that they meet. Please continue to hold our church up to God in prayer as we move through these important transitions. Your prayers and support are vital.
Chatting with a friend after the service last night, a phrase helped me to put words to my feelings. Together we said, "It is a sad thing, but not a bad thing." It is good and appropriate to be sad at a time like this. We can also be very thankful and hopeful. We have a great community of people to share life with and a great calling to continue to pursue. Together we will continue to work and pray to see our city reflect God's redemption.
Peace to you,
Ed Briscoe, Chair of the Elder Board
