All:
For a project proposal, I need to justify why we should use iRODS vs
other options. iRODS is a great fit as we need to enforce business
rules, associate resources with metadata, and support file
replication/distribution. My challenge is that I'm not exactly sure what
to compare with as nothing out there that I know off comes close. I'm
thinking about Microsoft File Replication Services and maybe Apache
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_Replication_Service) and Apache
Virtual File System (http://commons.apache.org/vfs/).
Any suggestions? Is there any document comparing iRODS vs other systems?
many thanks

Pascal:
There are multiple systems that address part of the iRODS capabilities.
Many of them are no longer available:
- IBM StorageTank. This managed storage across multiple systems within an
enterprise.
- Oracle internet file system. This registered links to files into the
database.
- Legion persistent object store
- HPSS manages data across multiple storage systems.
- Nirvana Storage Resource Broker, based on the SRB.

The above systems do not implement a distributed rule engine. Some do not
support metadata (HPSS), or do not support authentication across
administrative domains.
