One of my iRODS server stopped to work now.

It started normally, and I can see the process is up.
But I cannot run "ils" or anything else.

bash-3.2$ ils
ERROR: _rcConnect: connectToRhost error, server on suitcees.science.uva.nl is probably down status = -305146 USER_SOCK_CONNECT_ERR, Connection refused

And more interesting thing is, when I run "irodsctl stop" to
stop it, it said :
There are no iRODS servers running.

bash-3.2$ ps -u irods
   PID TTY         TIME CMD
18904 pts/2       0:00 ps
11935 pts/2       0:00 bash
11908 pts/2       0:00 bash
11907 ?           0:00 sshd
15982 ?           0:00 irodsSer
bash-3.2$ ./irodsctl stop
Stopping iRODS server...
There are no iRODS servers running.

Best,
Leo

hello Leo,

when you do the ils and get the error, what is in the log file ?
your iCAT server is running on suitcees.science.uva.nl
<http://suitcees.science.uva.nl>, right ? on which machine are you
doing the ils ? have you tried to do ils etc... on your iCAT server
directly ? does your .irodsEnv used for the client correspond to the
server you are running (port number etc...) ?

My iCat server in in San Diego, and it works fine here in several servers including a server in Japan.
The server in UvA used to work very well.
The problem occurs recently.

so you have one iCAT in San Diego and data servers in UvA and Japan. The
data server in UvA is using the iCAT server in San Diego.
If it is the case, if you send a "ils" request to the server in UvA, it
will connect to the iCAT server in San Diego in order to have the answer.
so, what's in the log file of the UvA server when doing a "ils" ?
you said that there is nothing special in the log when starting the
server in UvA ?
check if some firewall settings have occured recently wrt your UvA server.

Leo,

and go to server/log and take a look at the server log file to see any error msg during the
startup of the server ? The server may not be started properly.

Hi Leo,
It might be difficult to debug these things in multi-site environment. A systemic approach is useful.

- Check the log at uva to see if the server is really running at the right port as mentioned by JY
- Check the sys-admin or network admin at UVa and ask them if they made any changes to firewall  and confirm all the required port are open. check with other non-irods programs also to make sure you can reach the server at UVa

I am guessing its the firewall problem. It might be useful to write down the list of ports you need to be open and contact UVa network admin.

Cheers,
Arun
