Hi All,

I got a Create with the Command Module sometime early in 2008. Had a
lot of fun programming the CM to do the basic movements of the Create
around a room. Basically replicate in the bump and wander of the basic
demo. Also tried to get it to dock but never got that to work.

Next step was to put IR sensors so that it wouldn't actually bump into
things. Various life problems distracted me from that project.

Now I am ready to tackle another project. Just thought I'd share the
idea with all of you.

This will be a test bed for vision processing with the goal of
building a robot for a RoboMagellan competition (or somehow mounting
the Create so it can work outdoors). The brain is a Fit-PC Slim which
is a 500 Mhz PC with a 32 GB solid state hard drive. It has 3 USB
ports and runs on 12v. The power possibly will be from the Create.
Need to check on power draw and availability.

A web cam will be mounted on the Create. It will feed into RoboRealm
(RR), which has a Create module that communicates over the Create
serial port. The RR module will drive and read sensors. RR also will
do image transforms for detecting obstacles.

A program can interface with RR via a network socket to get
information from image processing done by RR, Create sensros, and
control the Create.

I installed RoboRealm once. Then uninstalled it once I realized how
overkill it was for what I wanted to do. The only reason I can see to
use it would be for the vision-processing. I have an EeePC (900mhz)
with built-in camera that can sit on top of the robot... maybe I'll
give it another try. I've used it to use as a Camera and User Display
and remote access/control to the robot. I've used it with Skype to
give me remote two-way audio-video plus remote control of the robot.
That worked very nicely. Set skype on auto-answer and I can call-in
from anywhere (a separate app is used for controlling the robot).

Good project, keep us posted!

My mistake. I tried Microsofts Robotics Studio before, which was
overkill for what I wanted to do. I am downloading RoboRealm to try
out the vision stuff on my EeePC with built-in camera.

The FitPC Slim looks like an interesting unit. Have you checked the
current draw on the
power supply yet? Any luck powering it off of the battery?

I think I answered my own question. The website says that power draw
is 4 to 6 watts.
and Envirogadget says it will run between 9V and 15 V. Looks very
interesting.
