Derek Warfield & The Young Wolfe Tones present Irish Musical Tradition the way it's meant to be.
Derek Warfield has enjoyed a lifetime of success as a founding member and leader (for 38 years) of the legendary
Wolfe Tones (1963-2001). He has also performed as a solo artist presenting the song- culture of the Irish in
America .His love of our musical heritage is such, that a way to transmit the great Irish musical tradition was of
vital importance and to pass it on to the next generation was a priority. So a new day dawns on The Wolfe Tones
legend, The Young Wolfe Tones. Assembled to continue the legacy of a legend are some of Ireland's finest
young musicians.

Derek Warfield & The Young Wolfe Tones have performed over 180 concerts in 2009, throughout 6 different
countries, Derek Warfield their lead singer, song writer and storyteller, and his Young Wolfe Tones .

“This band will have you clappin’ your hands, tappin’ your feet and shoutin’ till your voice is hoarse!”

Derek Warfield and The Young Wolfe Tones are known throughout the world for their quality musical
presentation of Irish patriotic “Rebel Songs” & Traditional Irish Music. It has been a fact acknowledged by many
in the Irish music industry that Derek is a great front-man, with top class, wry humor, background history and
stories, his top class fiery introductions bring the true meaning and sentiments of the ballads alive to his
audiences.

Derek says, “We all share the same passion and enthusiasm for our heritage. I have always believed that there is
something very profound in our song and musical tradition. All our history is in our music and this makes our
song tradition a unique source of historical information. And I have long considered it a privilege to carry its
message of inspiration to so many people. But perhaps most importantly it has been fun and enjoyable to
perform. To present a culture that we cherish and love gives great artistic satisfaction. Every performance gets
better. The experience has reinvigorated myself and given these young performers the opportunity to display
their skills and talents around the world”

“Communication with a live audience and interaction through song and music is what I believe to be of primary
Importance. I share with the audiences our hope dreams and aspirations and encourage participation and
enjoyment throughout the show. I believe that communication is now even greater then ever as it is free from
interrupting rhetoric, backing tracks. This continuity of communication is as powerful as ever, but more
importantly thanks to the Young Wolfe Tones I can present its traditional musical aspect with the expertise and
talent of the finest young musicians. We cover the whole spectrum of the Irish musical tradition and have such
great ability and talent that in every performance we present a show of Irish Musical Heritage in all its aspects
and I believe we are one of the few performing band’s doing so today.

When writing of our music and song Irish Patriot Padraic Pearse said "Had the Gaelic race never produced a
scrap of Literature, had our treasures of of history and romance never had a being, had our Cormac's, Keating's
and our O'Clery's and Donnchadh Ruad's never written a line, these folks songs of ours would have been
sufficient to prove for all time the glorious capabilities of our race" Always a man who recognised the value of
our cultural heritage his words reflect the importance that he held for our music and Derek Warfield and the
Young Wolfe Tones give this musical value to his belief.

Renowned Irish singer Susan McKeown and Lorin Sklamberg, lead vocalist of The
Klezmatics, present Saints & Tzadiks — a concert exploring the connections between Irish
and Yiddish songs, lore and myth.  Culled from rare archive material and old recordings,
McKeown and Sklamberg have selected songs on various themes from the Irish and
Jewish traditions such as love, death, betrothal and betrayal.  The bulk of the Jewish
material is drawn from the Ruth Rubin Archive at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research.
The Irish songs come from both the popular and the ancient Gaelic sean nós traditions.

Grammy award-winning vocalist Susan McKeown grew up in Dublin, Ireland, which she
left in 1990 for Manhattan.  Settling in the East Village, she first gained attention as a
singer-songwriter through her performances at Café Sin-é (Susan is featured in the
documentary film about the legendary informal Irish cultural center of the early 90s).

Susan has built an impressive career through her many releases, extensive touring and
performances on programs such as “A Prairie Home Companion,” “All Things
Considered,” “Mountain Stage” and “Sessions at West 54th Street” as the guest of Natalie
Merchant.  Susan’s voice and music have been featured in numerous documentary films
on PBS, BBC, RTE and ABC (Australia).  She has performed with Natalie Merchant, Pete
Seeger, Mary Margaret O’Hara, Linda Thompson, Billy Bragg, Johnny Cunningham and
The Klezmatics.

In October 2010, Susan was interviewed on Weekend Edition about “Songs from the East
Village,” the world music album for families that she produced. Her new album, “Singing
in the Dark” (2010 Hibernian Music), is an exploration of creativity, suffering and the
pursuit of happiness through the lyrics of poets.

Los Angeles native Lorin Sklamberg grew up in a culturally supportive conservative
Jewish community and began playing klezmer at 16.  He has been the lead singer of the
Grammy award-winning Jewish American roots band The Klezmatics since its founding in
1986.

His work as vocalist, composer and multi-instrumentalist can be heard on over 50
recordings.  He has performed solo and in collaboration with such diverse artists as Itzhak
Perlman, Don Byron, Uri Caine, Jane Siberry, Marc Cohn, Tony Kushner, Moxy Früvous,
Neil Sedaka, Emmylou Harris, Pete Seeger, Tracy Grammer, Odetta and, of course, The
Klezmatics.  His song “Headdy Down” (with unpublished lyrics by Woody Guthrie) was
recently printed in Sing Out! magazine. Ongoing projects include a series of
programs/CDs with Klezmatics band mate Frank London exploring the rich tradition of
Yiddish spirituals.  The latest is tsuker-zis (Tzadik).

He has written for film, stage and circus, he has produced a number of recordings of world
and theater music and he has performed and taught Yiddish songs from Buenos Aires to
Kiev.  Lorin serves as the Sound Archivist of the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. “One
of the premier American singers in any genre.”?— Robert Christgau, “All Things
Considered,” National Public Radio.

McKeown and Sklamberg first worked together in 2006 on the Grammy award-winning
album Wonder Wheel: Lyrics by Woody Guthrie.  Their latest collaboration Saints and
Tzadiks has received high praise for its exploration of the common threads that connect
the Irish and Yiddish song traditions.

“The listener is offered a reminder of the universality of human experience and of how
music can seamlessly celebrate difference.” — Songlines

“It’s not often that secular music is able to obtain the heights of beauty one would
normally associate with religious music, but this recording is as full of passion and
wonder as any oratorio to a god.” — blogcritics.org
Susan and Lorin are grant recipients from Culture Ireland’s Imagine Ireland US cultural
campaign 2011.

Clandestine is hard-driving, toe-tapping Texas Celtic sound. They re-formed in 2006 after a four-year break, with

set of bagpipes to the mix.

singular interpretations of songs in the Celtic genre.

Piper EJ Jones and fiddler Gregory McQueen return with the full force of their individual musical energies. EJ

-02/26/11 - Killdares at the Mucky Duck

Saturday, February 26, 7:30pm, $20

The band features Tim Smith on lead vocals and the drums – think Phil Collins of Genesis and Texas’ own Don
Henley of The Eagles.

Brek Lancaster plays lead guitar, and guest musician Gavin Kelso is on bass. World Champion fiddler Roberta
Rast plays the fiddle faster and more precise than imaginable, while Matt Willis plays the equally-difficult
Highland bagpipes, Irish uilleann pipes, and the Scottish small pipes.

Both Rast and Willis complement each other musically and help round out the Celtic sound while giving the
band a unique musical dimension live.

The Killdares are a Celtic rock band that blends a power pop sound with a mix of rock 'n' roll hooks and a
sometimes-traditional Celtic rock flair – thanks to the amazing use of fiddle and bagpipes. The result is an easy-
to-listen-to, accessible sound for people of all ages. And perhaps because of that, the band has quite a large and
loyal fanbase that filled up nearly every seat for the private screening at the Angelika Theater.

-03/02/11 – Buddy McGuire Band at Univ of St Thomas

Wednesday, March 2, 2011
The Brock McGuire Band
Traditional Irish Music from the West of Ireland
When: 7:30 p.m.
Where: Cullen Hall, 4001 Mt. Vernon, University of St. Thomas, Houston, TX 77006

Open to Public; Adults $10; children and students free.

The University’s Cullen Hall holds 165.

Advance tickets sold up to Monday, February 28th, 2011, by contacting Lori Gallagher at 713-
525-3592 or irishs...@stthom.edu and by checks made payable to the University of St.
Thomas Center for Irish Studies sent to Lori Gallagher at the Center mailing address below.

Other ticket sales first-come, first-served at the door with cash or checks made payable to
the University of St. Thomas Center for Irish Studies.

Note on the check or in an enclosure: March 2, 2011 concert tickets.

Back by popular demand to the University of St. Thomas William J. Flynn Center for Irish
Studies, the Brock McGuire Band is an award-winning Irish traditional band from County
Clare.  Master musicians Paul Brock, Manus McGuire, Enda Scahill and Denis Carey evoke
the atmosphere and artistry of the Irish dance hall era in dazzling fashion with their Irish
traditional music from the West of Ireland featuring the melodeon, tenor banjo, fiddle and
acoustic piano.

Paul Brock has been at the forefront of button accordion-playing for many years. A multiple
All-Ireland champion, Brock was born in Athlone, County Westmeath, and now resides in
Ennis. He was voted “Best Male Musician” in 2004 by the Chicago-based Irish American
News, and his duo album, Humdinger, recorded with fellow band member Enda Scahill, was
named “Irish Music Album of the Year” in 2006 by the Irish Times.

Manus McGuire is widely regarded at home and abroad as one of Ireland’s outstanding fiddle
players.  McGuire, originally from Sligo but now resident in East Clare, uses a dazzling
technique that takes us to Scotland, Shetland, Cape Breton and Ireland.

Enda Scahill comes from a musical family from Corofin in East Galway and has long
established himself as one of the finest exponents of traditional Irish banjo playing. The Irish
American News said of his playing: “he does things on the banjo that should be impossible.”

Denis Carey is a native of Newport, Co. Tipperary.  Carey is a musician, composer and
arranger with a diverse musical background from Irish traditional to classical, jazz and pop.
Denis runs his own Academy of Music based in Limerick.

Passion and precision, authenticity and diversity:  These are the hallmarks of the Brock
McGuire Band in concert. They are steeped in tradition and perform music with abiding
respect and creativity. The band’s repertoire runs wide and deep; their tight, tenacious blend
of instruments emphasizes mostly Irish music, but also sprinkles in impressive
arrangements of American Old Timey, French-Canadian and other Celtic traditions.
Described by the Irish American News as the “Best Instrumental Band in the Business,” the
Brock McGuire Band brings a wealth of experience and expertise to their performances.  It is
a sound and style that continues to excite audiences everywhere.

“The Brock McGuire Band was stunning, spreading their magic blend of
virtuosity and old style traditional charm across the stage and into our hearts.
Not only was their performance outstanding as always, but their selection of
material was delightfully novel, including a refreshing mix of beautiful vintage
tunes, original compositions and familiar favorites that showcased their
considerable talents in just the perfect light.”— Gordon McLeod, Southwest
Celtic Music Association, Dallas, Texas.

-03/17/11 – St Patrick’s Day at the Mucky Duck

Tuesday, March 17, 11am, $20

ST PATRICK'S DAY CELEBRATION

As seen in USA Today ... "One of the Top Ten Places to Celebrate St. Patrick's Day in
the USA."

Celtic blood-ties real, suspected and imagined have given many the impetus to learn
the folk-arts of the ancient tribes; a great way to explore Irish music and tradition.

The popularity of Celtic folk music is either a testament to the timeless appeal of
these sometimes haunting, sometimes hilarious, sometimes jig-inspiring tunes, or
perhaps an argument in favor of the nebulous theory of racial memory.

What we celebrate on St. Patrick's Day is the whole of Celtic culture, and a musical
tradition that, over the centuries, has become as much American roots music as
bottleneck guitar. The drums of western Africa are what gave American music its
rhythm; more often than not, though, the melody is Celtic.

Entertainment starts at Noon and continuing throughout the day. Serving great Irish
food all day starting at 11am

St Patrick's Day Menu

Fish & Chips
Shepherd's Pie

Corned Beef & Cabbage

Performers:
CLANDESTINE

...binding the heart of Celtic music to the soul of rock and roll….

Clandestine is hard-driving, toe-tapping Texas Celtic sound. They re-formed in 2006
after a four-year break, with the same brand of blasting tune sets and new songs. Al
Cofrin, the newest member, brings cittern and another set of bagpipes to the mix.

Percussionist and singer Emily Dugas captivates with her original song
collaborations with Al, as well as her singular interpretations of songs in the Celtic
genre. Piper EJ Jones and fiddler Gregory McQueen return with the full force of their
individual musical energies. EJ and Al also join Emily on vocals, with many songs
now set in three-part harmony.

JIGGERNAUT
Fueled by white-hot piping, fiery vocals, friggin' gonzo guitars and an irresistible
groove, Jiggernaut is setting out to convert the masses, and introduce new people to
Celtic music. Their sound is a rich mixture of old and new, traditional and
contemporary...appealing to all ages and musical tastes.

O'MAOILEIDIGH IRISH DANCERS
The world-wide success of Riverdance and more recently Lord of the Dance has
placed Irish dance on the international stage. Dancing schools in Ireland today are
filled with young pupils keen to imitate and learn the dancing styles which brought
Jean Butler and Michael Flatley international acclaim. O'Maoileidigh School of Irish
Dance, the preeminent school of Irish dance in Houston, will have their best step
dancers here to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.

JIM MACKENZIE
Our juggling, unicycle riding emcee, will amaze you with his antics, humor, and
knowledge of all things Celtic. Even green balloon snakes.

IRISH SESSION PLAYERS
The most visible Celtic-influenced traditional bands around Houston -- make
participating in the Session a regular, energy-charging part of their regular routine.
What is celebrated is the whole of Celtic culture, and a musical tradition that, over the
centuries, has become as much American roots music as bottleneck guitar. The
drums of western Africa are what gave American music its rhythm; more often than
not, though, the melody is Celtic.
The Session Players will be performing Irish tunes inside the Duck throughout the
afternoon and evening. The Mucky Duck incarnation of the Session, if for no other
reason than the frequent participation of younger musicians, gives a very real sense
of tradition passed on and history handed down.

BRIZEUS
Brizeus, a pipe and drum corps' raiding party named after the ancient god of
bagpipes and outdoor festivals, playing Celtic, Medieval, and original innovative
tunes both wicked and triumphant with sets ranging from 13th century Spain to 19th
century Scotland.

MARTIN BURNISTON'S IRISH SINGALONG

Join our resident leprechaun Martin as he leads the Celtic throngs through some of
your favorite Irish tunes and even a limerick or two.

MARYBETH MCQUEEN
A regular performer for out St Patrick's Day Celebration since she was 6 years old.
Marybeth has now added bagpipes as well as the fiddle to her performance.

-03/22/11 - Danny O’Flaherty & Noel Nash at the Mucky Duck

Tuesday, March 22, 7:30pm, $20
IRISH BALLADEERS - DANNY O'FLAHERTY and NOEL NASH
Danny O'Flaherty has captivated audiences from Old Jaffa and Jerusalem to
Washington D.C.  None other than The Washington Post raved, "Suddenly we were no
longer in our nation's capital; we were on a trip across the waters as we clapped,
sung along, laughed, and yes, even wept a tear at a gentle ballad. For Danny
O'Flaherty is good, very good.  His program wowed an appreciative crowd."
Whether is it a sold-out concert with the Tulsa Philharmonic, an invitation only
performance for the alumnae of Notre Dame University, an Inaugural Ball, a World's
Fair, a command performance for a pope or president, or a featured performance for
the Council of Exceptional Children's Annual Convention or the American Ireland
Fund, Danny O'Flaherty leaves every audience spellbound.

This talented musician switches seamlessly from guitar to accordion to tin whistle to
harmonica.  His repertoire is extraordinary.  Haunting ballads of loves lost and found,
songs of the sea and glen, aching calls for tolerance and peace, jigs and reels; Gaelic
favorites - traditional tunes interspersed with original hit recordings from his popular
CDs - all this and a bewitching personality that has audiences young and old calling
for more.

Noel Nash
Irish balladeer and songwriter Noel Nash has been captivating audiences throughout
Great Britain and the United States with his rare vocal power and sensitivity for the
past three decades.

Noel was born and raised in Co. Limerick, where he was educated by the Christian
Brothers. After two years study at the School of Music in Limerick, his emerging
expressiveness and talent as a musician and songwriter was demonstrated during
his early associations with several folk groups.

He began performing as a solo artist in 1971, appearing in some of Ireland's foremost
folk clubs. As his popularity spread, Noel travelled extensively throughout Ireland to
share the charm and magic of his music with other audiences, and also began
appearing in England, Scotland and Wales. In the late '70s, Noel met and formed a
partnership with the renowned songwriter Pete St. John. They performed and wrote
together for five years

The appeal of Noel's musical mastery and captivating stage presence resulted in a
tour to the United States with a series of concert performances in New York, Chicago
and Washington D.C. Noel remained in D.C for several years, again appearing in
festivals and on radio and television. He joined a group called "The Celtic Folk" and
they performed together there for three years. In 1984 the group relocated to New
Orleans to play together for an additional three years.

Today Noel lives in Ballybunion, Co. Kerry where he performs locally in The Cliff
House Hotel. Noel continues to tour throughout Ireland and to thrill audiences at Irish
festivals across the United States.

The Fine Arts and Drama Department invites you to “An Ideal Husband,” a
sophisticated comedy by Oscar Wilde.

Blackmail, intrigue, political corruption, public image versus personal honor and the
triumph of love; all these ingredients come together in Oscar Wilde’s delicious
comedy “An Ideal Husband.”  Who is above temptation?  Who has not taken a
misstep?  Set in 1895, this play is as timely today as it was during La Belle Époque.
As Wilde himself noted, “sooner or later, we shall all have to pay for what we do.”
But, “no one should be entirely judged by their past.”  Still, “to live the truth. Ah! That
is the great thing in life, to live the truth.”

-04/28/11 – The Spanish Armada & Ireland at the Univ of St. Thomas

Thursday, April 28, 2011
Dr. Joseph McFadden
The Spanish Armada and Ireland, 1588 – 1589
When: 7:30 p.m.
Where: Cullen Hall, 4001 Mt. Vernon, University of St. Thomas, Houston, TX
77006

Dr. Joseph McFadden, Professor of History and President Emeritus of the
University of St. Thomas, will present his research on the Spanish Armada and
Ireland.

Dr. McFadden’s lecture will describe how the Spanish Armada, consisting of
approximately 128 ships, set sail for the English Channel in 1588 to invade
England.  The Armada, the largest yet seen in the world, faced her Majesty Queen
Elizabeth I of England’s fleet of English and Dutch ships.  Yet, problems arose
and the Armada was forced to cancel the invasion and set sail for home.  Orders
were given that would have sent the fleet off the coast of Norway clearing
Scotland by 100 miles, heading into the Atlantic and passing 350 miles from the
west coast of Ireland, providing a clear run home to Spain.   Following these
instructions, the majority of the fleet made it safely home.   Those who were left
behind eventually straggled home, weather-beaten, in the third week of
September.

This presentation will focus on the fate of the “stragglers” — those ships that for
a variety of reasons could not avoid contact with the treacherous west coast of
Ireland.  As in the story of the Armada’s defeat, the Spanish experience in Ireland
is a mixture of fact and fiction.  This lecture will distinguish between the two by
clarifying reality about the experience of the Armada stragglers and their
“welcome” in Ireland in September 1588.

Dr. McFadden earned his Ph.D. from Northern Illinois University in American
History with a minor in Modern European History and Russian History.  He has
traveled extensively in Ireland and taught at Mary Immaculate College in
Limerick, Ireland.  He has been with UST since 1988, teaching as a history
professor since 1997, and serving as president between 1988 and 1997 and again
as interim president in Spring 2004.
