Hi Folks,
Gerry Mills having sadly passed away, there will presumably no longer be
a BGA Books stall at the Dublin tournament.
It occurs to me that one of the functions that the stall served can be fulfilled
by ourselves, namely giving prospective purchasers the opportunity to
browse before they buy. Those of us with books could bring them along for
display, so that people who might be thinking of buying a particular book could
get a feel for its content beyond just what the title suggests.
I'm thinking of this as a book show, not a second-hand sale; I don't see any reason
why people shouldn't be allowed sell on their books if they want to, but there should
not be a presumption that books brought along are offered for sale.
I foresee two problems:
1) faint possibility of theft. I spoke to Rory our President and he agrees that the IGA
could indemnify 'exhibitors' against loss.
2) retrieval of books after the event - I guess people won't fancy lugging their books
along to pub and restaurant and more pub on Sunday evening, and (owing to health
issues not disqualification!) I'm not allowed drive a car right now, so I can't offer a
return service. Solutions are needed.
If there are more problems you see, please raise them.
I think I could make up a supply of easily-removed "Not For Sale" and "For Sale"
stickers, we could set up a couple of big tables and let people add their books,
we could circulate a list of books people would bring along so as to avoid unnecessary
duplication of effort.
Maybe visiting foreign high-dan players have some books they recommend and would
be willing to display too.
If this is good for Dublin, there's no reason it couldn't be good for Galway Cork & Belfast tournaments too.
