Hi All,

Today I was thinking about stretching the website again. The css+images are set up to allow us about 700 pixels of content, I think the sidebar is 250 pixels. Things like the Japan (WAGC) points table need to be butchered in order to fit them into the page, and tournament results only just fit in.If this is going to be done, it seems to me that we might have an opportunity to get a new logo. The original one was designed for a 700 pixel width.

Anyone have any ideas?

Just add some empty space on both sides? ;)

Yes, I did this last time :p But come one now, don't we at least deserve a logo in which the joseki is completed? :)

Eh... this one looks OK to me :)
Ireland is not big enough for completed joseki :P

Yeah I wouldn't mind updating the logo, I think the attached IGA letterhead logo looks OK. Or maybe something that involves Celtic knots.

What do people think?

The hamete was deliberate; the 8 x 9 array accidental; eventually spotted by Tony Atkins.

Well I will try and make an update today, from 960 to 1160 pixels. The website is backed up on my laptop, so I can always recover things if I just ruin it completely.

Well, the new logo and css are installed now. The Top8 page needs to have its stylesheet fixed, I hate css too much to work out what exactly is wrong. Also, the images could do with some polishing, as they are quite 'jpeg artefact ridden' now.
Other than that, hope it's okay...

Hi Ian,

I'm only seeing the changes now, my browser had the website cached with the old images. I like the new logo, but the webpages seem to be very wide now and I have to scroll over to the right all the time to access the links. Was the intention to widen the pages so that results tables would look better? If so then my preference would be to restore the old web page width at the expense of the look of the results tables. I can have a stab at the HTML and CSS as well if you like.

Rory,

Yeah, the main reason for widening everything was down to tables. Displaying tables has always been a problem for us. The results tables, which use the OpenGotha.css only just fitted onto the page. Then the Japan points table was the other problem, as it was so big.

We could revert back to the old width, but add in new css just for the Japan points page.
I think that with OpenGotha we are okay for the results tables
I suppose another solution is just to chop off the oldest years from the Japan points page.
I guess that moving the links bar over to the left isn't much use...

Anyway, if you want the old images & css let me know

It is possible to have separate styles for given pages or post formats, so we could have one for the pages with large tables (tournament results, points tables). I don't think it makes much sense to widen the standard posts pages - the posts are mostly short enough anyway that they'll start looking like one-liners, and as Rory says, anyone with a small browser window is going to wind up scrolling to see the sidebar. After a point, I think it's fine to start culling old data from the points tables, as long as we have a complete version somewhere (Google Docs, maybe?) - they can't keep getting wider indefinitely.

I might have a dig around and see if there's a more modern theme that would work better for us - that one hasn't been updated for several years.

Hi Eoghan,

yeah I think anything should be possible. I'll contact Ian directly, get his old and new settings and play around with it myself for a bit.
