Dear members,
Happy New Year to you all. I do hope that 2010 will prove to be a prosperous and successful year for you all.

With the success of the ICRN in mind Nicola Carr and I met just before the Christmas break and discussed the future direction of the group.  We came up with a few items pertinent to the agenda for our next group meeting which will be held on Thurs 4th of Feb.

Bearing the future direction of the Irish Criminology Research Network in mind please have a read of the list below and compile any suggestions towards improving the aims and objectives of the ICRN that you may have. Any contribution will be greatly appreciated.

Looking forward to hearing your views on each topic on the 4th of Feb 2010.

Regards,

Maria.

Funding:
Look into the possibility of getting funding for the group from organisations such as Leargas, ACTRD, Atlantic Philanthropies, ISSP, or each university department represented by a group member (e.g.€200 p/a). Also a membership fee to help towards attending conferences etc might be an option.

Blog:
Nicola will check out with Fiona re set up and cost of a public site. She will also contact Eoin Healy and Jessica Breen re ownership of current site.

Contact time:
Look into the possibility of extending time between meetings to every 3 months rather than every month, However, organise the blog in such a way that everyone has the opportunity to post/feedback on a regular basis between meetings.

Motivations to attend meetings:  It might be more enticing to organise a speaker at these 3 month meetings rather than reading conference papers every time. The speakers would address topics such as Methodology, Research in Prisons etc.  [any other suggestions]

Aims and Objectives of Group Conf. Submissions, collaborative papers are encouraged at the ICRN. are there any other suggestions as to what the Aims and Objectives of the ICRN should be?

Upcoming events of interest:The Irish Criminology conference will be held in Belfast in University of Ulster in June 21-23, there will also be a ICOPA held immediately afterwards, June 23-25th. this might be an opportunity to work towards presenting something or at the very least organising a special "lunch-time" mini-conference at either event.

Next meeting the next ICRN meeting will  be held on Thurs the 4th of February 2010 to discuss the future of the ICRN. Time and venue will be arranged closer to the time.

This all sounds great..

One point I would make is that as far as I know all meetings to date have been in Dublin and I don't know about anyone else but that generally precludes me from attending, even though I would very much like to be involved. I can think of a few others in Belfast who are probably in similar positions. I know the Law School in Queen's would happily host a meeting if that was viable.

The human rights blog doesn't have running costs - the site used it very easy to work with: http://wordpress.org/ I think the main thing with the blog is getting people to contribute regularly, which the human rights one certainly manages.

That's my two cents!

Hello Maria

Thanks for posting that info. I have set time aside next week to have
a look at the blog situation - and have arranged for Azrini Wahidin to
give a talk on the 4th - I will post details on this shortly.

Happy New Year and talk soon

Nicola

Thanks Nicola,

That's great news about getting a speaker in,

Where would you like to host the meeting on the 4th?

The boardroom in DIT is always easy enough to arrange if you're ever stuck.

Regards,

Maria
