When sync'ing, will iRip leave songs in the iTunes library that are
NOT on the iPod? In other words, will my iTunes library, at the
conclusion of the transfer, contain all the songs on my iPod that are
NOT in my iTunes library, AND all of the songs that ARE in my iTunes
library and that are NOT on my iPod?

iRip *NEVER* removes anything from iTunes.

iRip will attempt to copy to iTunes. If it detects the track exists
already in iTunes it will not copy.

HOWEVER: when you plug your iPhone/iPad/iPod into your computer, if
you have not configured iTunes to not auto-sync (in the iTunes
preferences) then it may then sync causing you to lose data from
iTunes. This is iTunes doing this, not iRip - but is the source of a
lot of support requests for us as people think it is iRip at fault.

For this reason, we have a big splash screen when you first launch
iRip telling you to hold down the command and option keys when you
plugin your device as this tells iTunes to not auto-sync.

Thanks for the quick response. It was just what I hoped to hear. I
never allow iTunes to auto-sync. I'm ready to give the beta a try. I
have plenty of back-ups just in case anything goes wrong. I'm looking
forward to having a full and coherent iTunes library once again. I
plan to remove my iPhotos, et al. from my 80GB iPod and to have only
music, podcasts and movies on it.

Sorry - I should have also said that auto-syncing with iTunes may also
mean data is lost from your device as well. Best to (as you have)
disable auto-sync entirely.

Done! I merged 6,000+ files in my iTunes library with 9,000+ files on
my iPod and ended up with almost 11,000 files in the library. I've
discovered music(from the iPod) that I forgot I had.

Right after I hit the sync button, iRip became unresponsive and stayed
that way for about fifteen minutes. iTunes also went unresponsive for
a shorter period, but eventually the sync began. It took many, many
hours to complete, but I now have everything merged -- music, movies,
TV shows, podcasts, and playlists.

I hope that the performance will be improved in subsequent releases,
although I don't expect to use iRip all that often, since I intend to
manage iTunes' library better in the future than I did in the past.

I'm satisfied. A program that does what its developers say it will
do. I can now resync the iPod to iTunes, and I can recommend iRip to
my friends.

Thanks.

Hmm.. it shouldn't become unresponsive like that. Could you do me a
favour and run a test:

1. First of all make sure iTunes is up and running with your music
library selected.
2. Run iRip, plugin your iPod and do a sync - but limit it to, say,
podcasts or iTunes U (something small) only.

If you can try selecting different media types and seeing if that
makes any difference to the speed and if one particular type maybe
takes longer than another. If you have a lot of movies that may be
whats to blame. Also, do you see anything on the screen? Is the
progress bar showing copying progress? Does iTunes look like its doing
anything? Is there a beachball and can you cancel?
