There is another thing I would be interested in learning about which is
barcode reading. We have done a little with this but I was wondering if
anyone has used the barcode readers with attendance. We would like to
have teachers at the door of assembly with the readers to scan the student
ids and have that go directly into the fm database. In our current setup,
you have to go to the layout, hit New Record then put your cursor in the
field and then do the bar code read. That would be too slow with so many
students filing in.

Hi There,

I created one for Ross Global Academy. I will track down the example
and do a screencast.
Unfortunately I can't make it up there.

Thanks

Tessy,

The trend that I've been seeing is a shift towards RFID, but the principle is the same. There is a company in Japan that I am aware of that is looking to get into this market. They have a hardware product that reads the RFID chip (usually embedded in a student ID card) and can communicate via a plugin to a FileMaker database.

Your current system sounds like it could benefit from some script triggers, available in FileMaker 10. You could launch your application and via script triggers, have the scanning of the bar code trigger a sequence of events:

Create attendance record
Put cursor in data entry field
Wait for next scan

That sounds like it could significantly streamline your process. We can talk more about script trigger possibilities next week.
