Check out the Seventh Annual India Fest 2011 from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday on Fort Lauderdale Beach, at 801 Seabreeze Blvd. It promises to be a full day of fun, entertainment, food, and arts and crafts.

Q. What is the India Fest 2011 A. It provides a place for people of South Florida to embrace their diverse cultures, and experience the South Asian cultures which are a big part in South Florida’s economic growth and progress. We invite people of all cultures and ethnicities to attend.
Q. What type of activities will there be? A. The festival will feature Bollywood acts, Indian acts, classical dancers, belly dancers, and chutney dancers. In addition, there will be singing and dancing competitions, with prizes awarded.
There also will be tassa, dhol, bhangra teams, comedians, fashion shows, clothing, jewelry, arts and crafts. More than 100 exhibitors are expected. This will be the first time the event will be held on the beach. Previously it was held at Broward Community College North Campus in Coconut Creek.
Q. What are tassa, dhol and bhangra? A. Tassa is similar to a kettle drum and is common in India. A dhol is a heavy bass drum that dates back to the 15th century. It is common for one or more tassas to combine with a dhol and a bass cymbal to form an ensemble.
Bhangra is a form of folk music and dance that originated in Punjab. Traditionally, this lively entertainment is performed during the celebration of a harvest. Today, it is said to combine Punjab folk traditions with Western pop influences.
Q. As with any festival, will there be food available for sale? A. Yes. This festival will provide an excellent opportunity to introduce your family to Indian Cuisines from over 9 of the top most indian restaurant of south florida.
