and since when its anti femanisim to think that women are expected to cook? helloo! i know ily ma yo3rof yil3ab ygool il ga3 3oja:P but stil, for god's sake!

Its the most feminst role to play, when a well educated woman choses to be a wife and a mother, and its one of the great sacrifices women make: to give up thier outside-home activities and dedicate themselves to the inside-home activites. its such a sacred and amazing sacrifice, but the result of it is raising generations that are very well built nafsiyyan o ma 3idhom 3oqad nafsiyyah o moktafeen thatiyyan o mrabbayeen and raised on the right morals and manners. thats somethign only women can do, men are out working [or chasing other babes:P you know men are pigs!] so its really that not only women are half of the community, but they yrabboon the other half too, we can only depend on women to raise a healthy community, a community that shows more compassion and demonstrates better moralities and experiences minimun rates of crimes, THAT is fiminism, my lady, and yes, yeess, yesssss they are expected to cook too as well, how the hell are you gonna raise a loving community if they think your food sucks?

Khaloodi 3eni life is more beautiful when the woman and man are
participating equally in it. It is so boring if the woman takes one
department and leaves the other to the man. For me, my future man might
prefer to commit a suicide than force me to sit home for two reasons:
- He knows I make money more than him and we would definitely need that
money in our life.
- I would make his life a total hell if i stayed home not working.

I am not against cooking even though I rarely cook but I am sure once I
put my mind into it I will be one of the best cooks especially if it is
all for the one I would be sharing my life with. However I just hate it
when men think that women are the ones who should cook, wash dishes,
clean the babies while the men are sitting there with their bellies
watching football.

I am sure many working women agree with me on that.

By the way Khaloodi you just reminded me why I don't want to marry
Iraqi/Arab man :D

hehehe:))

no see you are taking my words and chanign them to fit the stereotype that we all dont like.

i know i know, all girsl here will say they want to work. I am not against that. and did i ever say that men shoudlnt work inside house too?

let me go into details then:)

women, DO participate equally in life, what was i just saying? but i am saying that equality doesnt mean....
no let me put in other words:)

men, SHOULD, and are required, to work inside home, and help clean the house, and help wash dishes and change dipers, itha howwa isayyidad 3a2isha si2loha shlon chan innabi PBUH in his house? she said: kana fee khidmati 2ahlih. كان في خدمة أهله
thats what i am saying. but i am saying that since i am too involved in west's life, and live among american people. and my mom was a working mother all her life, i know exactly how distressing it is, and how unfair it is, that women wake up so early, to do some house work, and then go to their jobs, and then go back home to cook, and take care of the kids, etc etc, its the most stressing life style. and i beleive that women deserve better than that, and i believe that the duty of raisign kids is far more important and deserves full priority. as long as the family isnt in real need for the wife to work, financialy i mean.

being a mother itself, is something to take great pride of itself, and realising that this itself is  an essential and fundemental remarkably important mission, is something some people seem to be forgetting. Now the funny thing is that the west, is starting to say exactly what i am saying! now oprah runs shows just to tell women that they need to be proud of being mothers and housewives and not say "i am just a mother and a housewive" but be proud of her role and take pride in it. just days ago i was reading a report about a german female organization that is calling for giving women the chance to live their lives peacefuly without HAVING to go out and work.

It is really one of the really wrong common feeligns in our society, that it makes women any less if they dont work. I believe it doesnt at all. and i believe it gives them the chance to give great care to their children. and i believe thats a very hounorable thing to do.

my mom, is a senior engineer, she is ranked in the highest rank the engineering union has. but when it was nessesary, she stepped back and dedicated her time to her children. till they/we became old enough she went back to practice her work and chase her projects, now she spends her time flying around the world meeting with goverments perliment members and NGOs and working on different humantarian and political projects against rhe occuapation. and i am so proud of her. but first was the realisation that her top and most improtant priority was during ceratin years, was to dedicate her life to give all possible care to her sons. us. and that is something i greatly admire.

so Miraj, my dear:) marry a man that wants the best for you, a man ykhaf allah and yo3rof illy 3aleh gabl illy 2ilah, and take great pride in being a good mother and a good wife, and practice your career and personal dreams! but all in the right time, first thigns first:)

and the cooking part was of coruse a joke, i didnt expect anyone would take it seriously:) and i am sure once you put yoru mind on it, you will be a great cook:) and you will have to invite us then:D

singture: an araqi/arab man:)

whoa! hot debate here!
well said, khalid..

ladies, the thing is, its not about arab culture as much as it is about Male culture, i mean, for example, parts of the south of iraq, man stays at home, women go to field and do the work..
yet still, its a male dominated society where man is the overlord.

again, the "west" has most of the problems we have but to a MUCH LESSER extent, its hard to spot them, but they are there:
one example:
its known that most men (also applies to NON-Arab, NON-Iraqi men) prefer women to be shorter or same height as them, smaller in general, its RARE to see a woman larger or taller than her husband/boyf./partner etc.
Tom Cruise, Prince Charles, who else? ..mm.., you can count them all using your hands!
another:
how many Male CEOs are out there? does anyone care even? its NATURAL, right?
how many Female CEOs? Oooh THAT many! Wow exciting! its so UNUSUAL! who would have thought?

see? this is OUR way of thinking, both guys and girls, arabs and non-arabs, we all take it for granted that the man is the provider, so when a woman stands up and wants to be so, we all stand in amazement!

this issue kinda receded and the "west" became "liberated" towards women because of these things mainly:
1. the sexual revolution/invention and wide-spread use of the birth-control pill (the fifties)
2. the Summer of Love/Hippie-dom (the sixties)

i've mentioned this before i think, my dear friend Hala S. once started a similar discussion, i dont remember if i elaborated as i am doing now.

back to the subject:
why are we not like them?
cuz we were too busy fighting wars against "outsiders" and against each other to notice anything else.

most arab countries which did NOT have turmoil in those decades, became "modern", example: Lebanon.
social change is easier if you have tourists, not a war/revolution.
and vice-versa.
and its getting worse not better.

this does not exempt anyone (esp. iraqis) from personal responsibility, but hey, we all know responsibility is hard, so, why not choose the easy way?
this is why its sooo much easier to dominate a woman, instead of having her as full partner.
and
it IS wrong. 100% wrong.

btw, even in WESTERN culture, there is now a rise in depicting women as Objects, you know, you see them everywhere, pop/rap/music videos, advertisements, video-games, its everywhere..
and We, and the generation after us, are accepting this as a fact of life.

sorry to have taken so much of your time, that is if anyone is still with me up to this point!

i close by saying that cooking is not related to gender in any way, its not related to brain-activities nor muscular activities, its not related to ANYTHING except "nafas"!
yep, that's what cooking is all about, either you have "nafas" in cooking, or you dont! :D

A friend of mine is a very good cook, she told me that nafes is a myth, she says I never cook with a wahis, I always do it min wara khashmee and the results are always mouth-wateringly yummy, and wallah I've tasted her delicacies mashallah ye3nee a brilliant chef.

mmmm.. ah, so, what is nafas?
let me detail:

nafas is not "Oweee Yumma khal assawie jidriyat dolma tiloog il hal 7alig " or something of the sort, its not the "force" in star wars movies, nooo..
its simply the effort one puts in the food-making process.

i mean: even if your friend is cooking min wara khashimha, she must know there are people going to eat her food, and she must care for them, one way or another!
dont tell me she does not get tired cooking, or that she doesnt spend a lot of effort in making them meals!
hey, when you do something you DONT like, you spend TWICE as much effort!

:)

and 3awafi for the good food :D

You know mum is originally from Algeria and Algerian women seem to have a lot of time to burn in the kitchen, their cuisine is so rich and so delicious but takes loads of time. I often tell her how ba6raneen they are. I hear women complain about how time consuming rolling grapes leaves for dolma is, well my mum finishes a whole pot in an hour for she makes harder things in less time.

y3ni always take the time to say thank you for the food or any other thing. lots of people think of these thigns as granted, bas walla they arent! y3ni mothers should be thanked every single day for what they do. for everything they do!

The thing is I tried to cook a coupla times and mum said I have her nefes, but I knew it was a ploy to make me do the cooking instead of her. Yeah sure as if I could fall for that, but I only make the things I love the most, that is pasta, spinach, anything with potato among the ingredients and 3roog.

13, it is so nice that you write in your own accent.

When I used to go to work before security gets so bad I used to have
such a good time listening to my colleagues talking to each other :)
