Thejobs will be created in the company's offices in Cork, Ireland, and Will O'Brien, vice president of business development, believes that the results of their work will help the company break new ground in the games industry. The model is Netflix; a vast library of content available for a few clicks and a monthly fee.

"Often, these games are north of 500mb file size, and so by leveraging the cloud, and leveraging the increasing adoption of mobile devices, connected TVs and other platforms, we're going to be able to allow users to instantly start playing these rich, high-quality games without the time it takes to download a large file," he says.


So far, the discussion around cloud technology has focused on AAA gaming through Gaikai and Onlive, but O'Brien claims that Big Fish is better placed to emulate the mass market success of Netflix and Spotify.


"Because our focus is on casual games we have a unique set of challenges, but not the same challenges as core games do - in terms of latency," he says. "Our games work really well over a 1 to 2mb per second connection. In the US, I think the average consumer connection is 3.2mb/sec broadband. I think we already have a really great approach to solving that problem."


The first evidence of Big Fish's cloud strategy emerged in November last year, when the company launched the App Store's first ever subscription-based streaming service. However, the app was abruptly pulled within a week. The reason for Apple's reversal is still unclear.


"For the folks that downloaded that app and have used it, that was a great example of what we can do with this cloud gaming technology," he says. "But it's part of a broader strategy. We have a good, longstanding relationship with Apple and a very strong mobile app business, and we'll continue to work with them on what's best for our customers in the App Store."


O'Brien politely declines to offer more details, but whatever Apple's stance on the issue the company ultimately has wider ambitions. In September last year, Big Fish installed Amazon's David Stephenson as CFO. A fortnight ago, it hired Rovio's global branding chief Wibe Wageman as senior vice president of mobile.


"Casual games are a natural fit for the cloud," O'Brien says. "From a content perspective we're very much leading and pioneering [the casual] space, and on a technology front we're leading and pioneering the cloud space."


We still need the old WebSphere based Kudos Boards from ISW. Users reported that ajax operations like setting due dates or responsible people in a card are very slow, some even abort before finished. Until now I can't see a pattern here why this occurs. It doesn't seem related to a specific user or client.


How could this be troubleshooted? I'd like to take one step back and measure first, how long it takes to process requests. Then generating a list of all requests that took more than a specific time to process, lets say more than one second. So we know how many users are affected from this and there are maybe some shared things between them, like users on a slow network or something like that.


Using the %UNITT format, it could be displayed in microseconds instead of seconds, which is better for analyzing later. So I extended the common log format to write the processing time first in conf/httpd.conf:


Now we can do a graceful reastart on productive environments. This way, the webserver finishes all currently processed requests before applying our new config. In opposite to a hard restart, most of the users shouldn't even know that we restarted their webserver.


We now have several hundred MB of logs from a single day. A filter is required to get usefull information from them. When looking in the logs, we need to do two things to get information about slow requests from them:


The first egrep call filters out all requests which are not interesting here: /push is from the long keep alive connections, kudos do this as well. I also excluded mp4 movies because those files are naturally large. When downloading a 500MB movie take some time, it's nothing we need to worry about. Sometimes I also saw them with GET parameters like movie.mp4?logDownload=true&downloadType=view so those were filtered as well.

At the moment, urban expansion is at his height and is causing enormous environmental damage. Road construction (which makes up a huge portion of this) is one of the main factors in this environmental desctruction. Not only do roads take up enormous amounts of space (for which forest land often needs to be cleared) but they also account to a huge decrease in biodiversity (as the forests are cleared which provide housing to animals) and as the roads are a source of noise/disturbance and work as a physical (virtually uncrossable) barrier for animals. These negative implecations of roads have been demonstrated by roads as the BR163, which cuts trough the Brazilian rainforest.


In addition, roads and cars have extra design-specific problems with them as easy clogging (with reduced speed/efficiency as a consequence) and a cost/or fuel-inefficient way of transport (ships and aircraft being much more efficient). These problems together with the costs of creating/maintaining the road itself have resulted in heavy financial losses. As such, a mitigation to a better system of transport is proving necessairy.


The city-to-city transportation vehicles should be seemlessly hooked up to the in-city transportation system/vehicles. This can be done by for example providing a good connection between trainstations, airports and busses, metros, skycabs, ...


Besides the environmental and increased efficiency advantages described by the elimination of (most) roads and cars, there would also be extra advantages for the city. As demonstrated in Shanghai and Seoul (see article), trough effects as the Braess paradox, traffic flow may be improved by implementing physical barriers in the city. By banning out the car (which can only be effectively realised in practice by putting up physical car-barriers as F-shape barriers or bollards) this same effect can be accomplished.


In addition, as cars (being 4-wheeled vehicles) would be largely replaced by 2-wheeled vehicles, the cities will almost inmediately be freed from the now contemporary traffic jams. This positive effect on the traffic flow and the enlarging of its capacity can be seen from cities that almost exclusively rely on 2-wheeled vehicles. Examples for this can be found in Dhaka (Bangladesh) and Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam).




How the system can be implemented in practiceSimply put, physical barriers as F-shape barriers and bollards would be placed at the edge of the city and would still permit passage to the city for 2-wheeled vehicles, but deny it for 3- and 4-wheeled ones. To still allow passage for 3-wheeled vehicles (and the occasional 4-wheeled one), provisions as retractible bollards (which may be opened only by certain people) can be placed.


Outside the cities, 4-wheeled vehicles and cars would not yet be banned by law until further notice, and parking spaces would be set-up at the edge of town to provide people the further use of their car and allow them to phase it out gradually.


Aldough the best PAV-design or manufacturer is still to be determined, the best vehicles are those which combined a fully automated control with propeller-driven VTOL technology. These include the Aerovironment SkyTote, DM AeroSafe Group Aerocart, and Bell-Boeing V-22 Osprey. Automated versions of these vehicles allow the use of zero-emission engine technology (as the compressed air engine, electrical engine on fuel cell, ...), unlike what is the case with turbofan or jet engine propelled vehicles (aldough hydrogen combustion is still a noteworthy exception to this).


As such, we should have control mechanisms in place that ensure that no person, inequipped to hold such a powerful function/position is able to attain this position/function. Besides preventing of putting the wrong people in charge, we should also ensure that the people/groups at the base of the pyramid (ministers and political parties) work to address those problems/issues that are a priority, in that point in time and in that particular country. This means that completely independent research needs to be conducted and a huge variety of political agenda points need to be available. This requires a huge amount of political parties to be available, far more than the amount of parties currently available in any country (developed or undeveloped).
