Subject: Information on Dr. Wasim Zaman's untimely demise
Dear Colleagues,
It is with profound sadness and grief that we inform you that Dr. Wasim Zaman, Executive Director of ICOMP, passed away on March 20, 2014 while on mission in Kabul, Afghanistan to advance the advocacy on the ICPD agenda. Dr. Wasim was one of the nine civilians killed in the brazen attack in Serena Hotel, Kabul by four gunmen. Though Dr. Zaman has been fallen victim by this attack, his spirit and passion towards better governance and universal health access in developing countries will live on.
Dr. Zaman has been ICOMP’s Executive Director since 2009. With his leadership, ICOMP has recently been reclassified to a higher level of ECOSOC affiliation and positioned it in the league with the top most level of UN recognized international NGOs. Prior to this, he had a distinguished career in the field of population and development and served in various senior level capacities with UNFPA including as Director of UNFPA’s Regional Technical Office for South and West Asia.
We strongly condemn such brutal attack to innocent victims. We express our heartfelt condolences and prayers to Dr. Zaman’s family and the families of the other victims.
For further communication with ICOMP for this period, please address them to:
