Hi All,
Yesterday, me and Manju had a half an hour long skype meeting with Kiran. Kiran will be in Delhi for 10 days around in November between 14th to 23rd. There will be a writing workshop on 19th and 20th November at CSSP, JNU. This work shop is open to all the students at CSSP as well as students from other centres also (whoever is interested). But, Kiran’s interest is that all the participants have to be really very serious about this writing workshop. Therefore, she has decided to keep the maximum number of participants/students between 10 to 15 and not more than that. She expects that at least following students should participate in this workshop:
Nima, Ramya, Vidya, Monica, Manju, Versha, Pravin
Other students from CSSP and any other centre are also
welcome. The first draft of the paper/synopsis has to be submitted to Kiran by
16th Oct. 2010. Those who submit this write up before the deadline
will be the participants of the workshop.
We have also asked Kiran to give a separate refresher kind
of lecture on social theory (especially Post-colonial theory) and if possible
then a special lecture on how to write academically? These lectures will
be open to all.
Kiran will write to you in detail in next mail about the write
up and workshop. She will also send a few readings to be read by every
participants before the workshop.
You can share this mail with your colleagues/friends, and
the condition of seriousness posed by Kiran is must for participating in this
workshop.
Hi All,
A few clarifications I received today from Kiran in response
to my previous mail. First, is that this workshop is being organised by Kiran
at Rohan’s request for CSSP students only, in which students will read and critique each other's writings.
The workshop will be
organized as small groups of 3-4 students making their presentations spread
over two days; and will involve ACTIVE
work on the student's part in two senses. One, that the students
produce a piece of writing (10-12 pages) to share with their peers (NOT with Kiran),
and second, that they work to give constructive feedback to their peers. To
have a successful workshop, the group needs to be small- NO MORE than 10-12 students. So, please don’t
advertise it outside the centre.
One
more clarification regarding the names of the students which I mentioned in
previous mail is that she doesn’t expect them to participate, but hope
they will, and she hopes that they will take the lead in selecting/encouraging
a few other folks for the workshop. As she is already over occupied with
lots of readings from the midterm exams and papers from the students she is
teaching there, so please avoid sending her mountains of papers to read on Oct
16, rather we’ll read each other’s papers and share with Kiran on 19th
and 20th Nov. What we can do is that share our write up with her
through mail in advance.
The
readings will be sent by Kiran only
for the refresher lecture and not
for the writing workshop.
As her schedule is already very tight, so she will not be able to do an extra academic writing workshop.
Finally,
I request all of you to immediately start working for it and finalise 10-12
names from CSSP for this workshop.
best,
Hi Pravin, Manju and Rohan
Pravin thanks for following up on our conversation. A couple of clarifications. The first regarding the Writing Workshop, this is something I am organizing at Rohan's request for CSSP students. The workshop will be two "hands on" sessions in which you all (the students) will read and critique each other's writing. The workshop will be organized as small groups of 3-4 students and will involves ACTIVE work on the student's part in two senses. One, that the students produce a piece of writing (10-12 pages) to share with their peers (NOT with me), and second, that they work to give constructive feedback to their peers. To have a successful workshop, the group needs to be small- NO MORE than 10-12 students. Therefore, please DO NOT advertise this widely. Also, the group of folks that you name - I don't expect them to participate, but hope they will. And I hope you and they will take the lead in selecting/encouragng a few others folks for the workshop. Pravin, please DO NOT send me mountains of papers to read on Oct 16. I'll be buried in reading midterm exams and papers from the students from the two seminars I am teaching here. So Pravin, Rohan, Manju, Nima - figure out who how you will select 10-12 people for the writing workshop. I don't like doing the workshop-- it is a lot of work. I am willing to do as I feel committed to the crew I got to know last year. Once one set of folks do the workshop, you all can arrange it for others. You won't need me in the picture.
Second clarification is that the readings will be for the refresher lecture. NOT for the writing workshop.
Finally, I think we agreed that I would not do an academic writing workshop because my schedule there was already becoming very very full.
Thanks again for following up Pravin. I really appreciate your doing this. Would you send out the clarifications to iquestion?
Rohan et al, also wanted to tell you that I am persuading a Brazilian-French friend of mine to come with me to Delhi in December. She works with indigenous women in Ecuador and is a fantastic and fun person. I want to get her on board the Manju-Monica India-Latin America train......
Hugs in haste
Kiran
