*ON THE OCCASION OF INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY (March 8th)*
WOMEN’S STUDIES PROGRAMME, JNU
INVITES YOU TO A DAY OF FILMS
*COMMEMORATING BATTLES FOR FREEDOM, RIGHTS, LIBERTY *
VENUE: 002, COMMITTEE ROOM, SCHOOL OF SOCIAL SCIENCES 2, JNU
TIME: 10-5
*10 A.M.: The Advocate, by Deepa Dhanraj, 2007, 126 mins.*
The name of K.G. Kannabiran is synonymous with the founding of the human
rights and civil liberties movement in India. The film as part biography and
partly history of the times attempts to document the remarkable contribution
of Mr Kannabiran in challenging the Indian State to uphold the rule of law
in institutions of governance, justice and political praxis.
*12: 30 P.M. : Tales from the Margins, by Kavita Joshi, 2006, 23 mins.*
Twelve women disrobe publicly on the streets of Manipur, in protest… For
over 6 years a young woman has been on a fast-to-death demanding justice;
she is kept under arrest and is forcibly nose-fed. Why are the women of
Manipur using their bodies as their battlefield? ‘Tales from the Margins’
travels to this remote, strife-torn corner of India to document the
extraordinary protests of Manipuri women for justice. And through their
lives, to focus on a vast human tragedy.
*1:15 P.M.: Autumn’s Final Country, by Sonia Jabbar, 2003, 66 mins.*
'Autumn's Final Country' is the touching story of Indu, Zarina, Shahnaz and
Anju, four women who suffer displacement in the conflict-ridden State of
Jammu and Kashmir. Recorded as testimonials for the South Asia Court of
Women (Dhaka, August 2003), the film explores the lives of each woman as she
relates the circumstances leading to her rootlessness, and reveals an
intimate dimension of the Kashmir conflict, raising questions about
patriarchal values and power, communal identities, patriotism and war.
The day will end with a discussion on democratic rights in India. SONIA
JABBAR and VRINDA GROVER will be present to initiate this, and we hope to
open this up to engage with the ongoing people’s struggles in the country.
In a context where championing democracy is deemed as ‘sedition’, we wish to
remind ourselves of those, like Dr. Binayak Sen or Irom Sharmila, who
symbolize courage, and the spirit of relentless resistance.
