Social Theory and Development

A brief, barren marriage or clandestine relationship?

The project of development, and its recent avatar globalization have a long history with links to 18th century Enlightenment ideals of progress through reason.   But though the problems and idea of development remain salient, their historical roots and links to debates about capitalist, colonialism and nationalism are all but lost.  So can “development” be achieved through science and technology?  Are discussions about theory, politics and history (often dismissed as “ideology”) irrelevant in discussions about development?  Or are they the invisible monkeys on the backs of development and the globalization enterprise?

This lecture/discussion will focus on these questions.

Lecture By

Dr. Kiran Asher
(Associate Professor, Clark University, U.S.A)
