Description:After providing a broad overview of the historical relationship
of the Indian women's movement with religion, the presentation will explore
the emergence of two networks, the Muslim Women's Rights Network and the
Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan. It will focus particularly on the
relationship of these networks with Islamic discourses and actors and with
the wider women's movement in India.

Nida Kirmani received her PhD in 2007 from the University of Manchester, and
her thesis explored Muslim women's narratives in Delhi. Since this time,
she has been working as a Research Fellow with the Religions and Development
Programme at the University of Birmingham and has conducted research on
women's movements and religion in India and on faith-based organisations in
Pakistan.
