The GOP wants to bollix Trump's ambitions by running a party-preferred third-party candidate. This would split the Electoral College with neither Clinton nor Trump receiving the required number of EC votes. In turn, this would out put the presidential election in the hands of an expected (hoped for) Republican House, who would then elect that third-party candidate president.
