In case you need a reason for your blood to boil today, this article on the ascendency (descendency?) of anti-vaxxers ought to do the trick.

It’s looking as if 2017 could become the year when the anti-vaccination movement gains ascendancy in the United States and we begin to see a reversal of several decades in steady public health gains. The first blow will be measles outbreaks in America.

Okay, so how do we combat this issue? Which, I guess, leads to the greater issue of how do we turn the tables on increasing negative feelings toward the press—since it is they, not scientist, which are the conduit by which scientific progress is disseminated to the masses.

Are literacy tests out?  :)
I meant, of course, for candidates.  Something serious, like the SAT.  Not to disqualify dumb candidates, but just a score to appear in parens after their names on the ballot.

I fear this would have a negative effect from what you're hoping for here.

In any case, imposing any litmus test is a dangerous slippery slope that will (further) lead to a
separate political class.

I'm afraid the success of our democratic "experiment" rests on the willingness/ability of the
electorate to make themselves truly informed.

The press is awful at communicating science, and is getting worse at it. There are science communicators and scientists working to get more scientists the skills they need to communicate directly. We need more Sagans and Tysons. Lots more.

I would not hold my breath waiting for the media to write decent science stories.

I’m not sure how the thread turned into “how do we oppose Trump” (are vaccines the connection?), but if you like Frum’s take you might enjoy his appearance on the latest Sam Harris podcast.
