As we discussed on Wednesday, at our F2F, Pope Francis' frankness is driving the right crazy with his pontificating on a variety of what they consider to be subjects outside his Papal authority: climate change, brokering relations between Cuba and the US, or advocating helping the poor! And, of course, the topic of the moment: recognizing the Palestinian state.

Politico is reporting that a number of right-wingers are advocating that his Holiness stick to foundational issues:

“It’s interesting how the Vatican has gotten so political when ultimately the Vatican ought to be working to lead people to Jesus Christ and salvation, and that’s what the Church is supposed to do,” said Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-S.C.), a hawkish defender of Israel.

Francis to EU:

"The problem is your immigration policies.  They are designed to keep people out.  Redesign them to take people in."

The nub of the matter seldom eludes the Jesuit mind.
