 Mid-year check-up 2007

So, it's 6 months into the year, and the stuff that's vying for my top spots of 2007:

Dinosaur Jr.
BRMC
Arctic Monkeys
Feist
Shins
Manic Street Preachers

...and some less prominent stuff that I can't think of right now.

And you?

Someone had to start some shit around here.

I'm loving the hell out of the Rosebuds' new album.

Also enjoying:

Voxtrot
Good, Bad & Queen
Amy Winehouse
Detroit Cobras

The new Graham Parker is my favorite since MONA LISA'S SISTER

Couple of great country albums right now by Elizabeth Cook and Miranda Lambert

The Arctic Monkeys continue to elude me - enough people whose opinions I respect love them so I'm trying to hear what they hear, but so far, for me, grasping their appeal has been like trying to grab hold of mercury. I hear lots of energy and attitude, but so far haven't heard a single tune I would want to hear again. In theory, I ought to love them, but in practice, I just ain't feeling them. But I'll keep trying.

Honestly, I had the same stance on them about a month ago. But then the guitar work and the loopy but tight rhythms started to get to me. The guitars work off of each other in a simplistic, almost post-punk manner. But there's something really unique about what they do. Then there's a guitar intro to "Brianstorm" that's almost Dick Dale. They really come at you from left field. I suggest starting with "Flourescent Adoloescent" on the new album. Rhythmically and melodically it's a real interesting song; it really grew on me. Then I'd listen to "Brianstorm" [sic]. I think it's the guitars and Alex's interesting vocal cadences that really started my fascination with them. I've done a 180 since I gave them a lukewarm review a month ago. Another album I should have lived with longer before shooting off my mouth.

Arctic Monkeys first album was an excellent (though overrated) fun party record.

Their second album is a quantum leap into a whole other realm. Great songs, great playing and lyrics. What's so inspiring about them on both records (though way more on this new one) is that they find a lyrical entry point and then find endless ways to riff on it and spin it into new ideas.

On "Favourite Worst Nightmare" they just zero in on everything they don't want to be as adults and they end up saying more about adulthood with more insight than the bland Hallmark card sentiments of most middle aged "adult" performers (Jeff Tweedy, I'm looking at you pal).

Anyway, "Favorite Worst Nightmare" is my record of the year so far.

Ike Reilly is a close second.....The Black Lips Los Valientos del Mundo Nuevo would be third.

Also liked Ted Leo (that came out in March), I missed the Sloan record in 2006, but I've played it to death in 2007........

Crap! Forgot to mention the Long Blondes in my earlier post. A leading contender for record of the year for me. Everything that Elastica never quite managed to be.
