I have reports from other accounts that they are getting a few
multiple copies now, too. In addition, it seems that for some of the
characters, the beta-versions were kept (ie, the more up-to-date
versions on the main site were lost).
An example is:
http://iplay4e.appspot.com/characters/agdpcGxheTRlchMLEgtDaGFyYWN0ZXJWMhiQwxoM
and
http://iplay4e.appspot.com/characters/agdpcGxheTRlchMLEgtDaGFyYWN0ZXJWMhjzuicM

I have the old, full-sized character sheets saved as bookmarks. such
as:
http://iplay4e.appspot.com/characters/viewSheet?xsl=fullpage&key=agdpcGxheTRlchELEglDaGFyYWN0ZXIYhuIIDA
Visiting this link, then looking at my character list, I noticed that
I now had two copies of Marcan:
http://iplay4e.appspot.com/characters/agdpcGxheTRlchMLEgtDaGFyYWN0ZXJWMhiQ-BoM
and
http://iplay4e.appspot.com/characters/agdpcGxheTRlchMLEgtDaGFyYWN0ZXJWMhjk2icM
So, apparently, the old links don't quite work with the new site.

Because I think I see what's going on here. Here's how it's supposed to work:
- When you access an old-style key, we check to see if the character's
been migrated before, by pulling up the new key stored with the old
character.
- If so, forward to the new-style key.
- If not, migrate the character and store the new key in the old
character, then forward to the new character.
The problem is that folks who visited the labs earlier on in the beta
had some characters that didn't get migrated properly (it didn't store
the new key in the old character). When you hit the old bookmark, the
lookup said "this character hasn't been migrated yet". So it got
migrated again.
If you confirm this, it may be the best thing to do is leave it alone.
It'll flush out all the characters that were improperly migrated
early in the beta, and it doesn't affect newly uploaded characters.
And better duplicate data than missing data!
Does that seem too bad to anyone?

The interesting thing to note is that the bookmarks link to current
characters, whereas without them, the site only shows old characters.
eg:
original character level 10.
labs copies character @ level 10
play continues, character reaches level 14
labs gets uploaded to main site, level 14 character is lost, level 10
character is now only one on main site
use bookmark, level 14 character gets loaded into main site
there are now two characters, level 10 and level 14.

I should add the two possible issues with this.
First, it means that only those of us in the know will be able to
recover our old characters without having to upload every file again.
Second, it means that anyone without bookmarks will have to upload old
characters to the site manually.
It would be preferable if the old main site characters were the main
ones shown, not the ones from the labs site. Failing that, do a one-
off duplication, where every character for everyone is shown to them,
and we just have to sift through all of them, and delete those we
don't want.

if the bookmark is clicked, and the character added, and then the
(new) character is deleted, and the bookmark is clicked again, the
extra character is created again.
ie:
site has Bob(level 10).
click link to Bob(12)
site now has Bob(10) and Bob(12).
delete Bob(12)
site now has Bob(10) only.
click link to Bob(12)
site now has Bob(10) and Bob(12) again.
I have repeated this a handful times, the link keeps creating the "Bob
(12)" character if it is not there.
Okay, then I'm not way off the mark.

In your steps below, when you say "play continues", do you mean on the
labs or the main site? I'm having a hard time seeing how the level 14
character would get lost. We were seeing doubles.
The main issue here is that the correct versions were written over
when the labs version came to the main site.
umm...let me try again.
Bob-10 was on the main site.
labs copied Bob-10.
over time, Bob-10 was leveled up to Bob-14, and the dndi sheet for
Bob-14 was uploaded onto the main site.
labs still only had Bob-10, though.
Labs version goes live, overwrites Bob-14 with Bob-10. Now, only
Bob-10 exists.
However, if we happen to have a link to Bob-14, we can use it, and it
recreates Bob-14.
Thus, we now see double-Bob's, one from the original site, saved via a
bookmark (14), one copied from the labs site (10).
...does that help?
