Nobody knows what DDI will be like for D&D Next, but the aim of the game is an system so much more rules-light that something lie iPlay4e wouldn’t make sense.

Personally, I hope to hear more details after Winter Fantasy (6-9 February).

I believe that an iPlayNext or iPlay5e (or whatever) would be extremely useful, but it would need to be set up with selectable rulesets to make it work properly, since the system is being set up with optional rules modules (though not with that terminology). Of course, at this point no one knows what electronic aids will be supported by WotC, nor what that support would look like.

The XML in the current character sheet is fairly rich, so I would like to think that the developers of DDI would be able to extend the current character builder and put useful information in to the new XML which indicates what rulesets, etc were in use when the character was created so that consumers (i.e. us) can hide/show sections as appropriate.

But indeed, we have no idea what that will look like at the moment.

It's already been announced that there will be no more updates to DDI for 4e beyond March, so I don't expect much for the future, I'm sad to say.

  • Starting in March of 2014, the DDI tool set (Character Builder, Adventure Tools and Compendium), will no longer be updated with new 4th Edition game content.
