Hi,

I found an old PMG Quadpad in a box and turned it on to find it still works.  It runs Windows XP and has an 800x600 TFT touch screen.  It's basically an early Windows driven web-pad... bit clunky, but it works.

The problem I have is that for some reason iplay4e does not appear to show horizontal scroll bars - does this sound right?  I can't seem to find a way to scroll the page to right to sign in and test out the tablet view.  I've tried it in Firefox and Chrome.

Any ideas?

Cheers,
Chris

Chris,

You are correct in that the overall design of iplay4e suppresses
horizontal scrolling. We really presume that your browser is at least
850px wide - and are unlikely to change that assumptions, since it's
prevailingly true.

That said, there's a back way you could pull it off. If you pull up
your character in a normal browser, you'll have a URL something like
this:

http://iplay4e.appspot.com/characters/agdpcGxheTRlchMLEgtDaGFyYWN0ZXJWMhj74TEM

You can view the character straight-up, with no iplay4e wrapper, by
going to a URL like this instead:

http://iplay4e.appspot.com/view?xsl=fullviewPref&key=agdpcGxheTRlchMLEgtDaGFyYWN0ZXJWMhj74TEM

You can either make the obvious translation yourself, or you can pull
the URL out of the "src" attribute of the iframe code found under
Link/Embed - Any Site.

Viewing the character outside of the iplay4e "wrapper" will allow your
browser to add horizontal scrollbars if they're appropriate.

Cheers,
Andrew

Sussed it...

I used Chrome to 'zoom out' (Ctrl-) a couple of steps and that let me login.  However, the tablet view is somewhat cramped and hard to read at 800x600.

I had another idea and that was to use the iPhone view.  I discovered the URL for that by adding the Google gadget to my Google homepage and then opening that frame in a new tab.  Didn't look so good in landscape mode, but my Quadpad has a rotate option, so it looks just fine in portrait. :)

Would it be possible to choose this explicitly from the view menu on the normal page?  It's actually quite a useable interface, especially for that device.

Thanks,
Chris

Thanks Andrew - we must have hit 'send' at roughly the same time. :)

I've attached a pic, in case you were curious as to how it looks.

Cheers,
Chris

That's not a bad idea (to add the mobile view to the view menu).
Would "Open mobile view in new window" do the trick?

The pic you sent looks pretty slick. It's nice to see iplay4e running
on devices I never even heard of!

That would do me just fine, thanks Andrew :)

Yeah, I forgot I even had this thing ... I bought it back in 2005ish - it obviously didn't take off.  I imagine partly because it's like having a crippled PC and all the fiddlyness that goes with it.  I suspect the iPad will have a lot more success because it's targeted at consumers in much the same way as the iPhone.

Cheers,
Chris

Done.

To anyone who's made a request and didn't get an immediate feature
add: please don't be jealous, this took me all of three minutes ;->

Cheers,
Andrew

Great thanks!

One thing though - the menu item seems to be obscured when viewing all characters (see attached - on Safari).   You can still select the item though, so it's OK.

Cheers,
Chris

Yeah, that's actually a more general problem (other menus also
affected) that I'm aware of; thanks for pointing it it.

Cheers,
Andrew
