Annual Conference on European Media Law returns to Trier and online with IPKat readers’ discount

The Katfriends at the Academy of European Law (ERA) in Trier are always busy organizing new activities and events in various legal fields. This time, they wish IPKat readers to know the forthcoming Annual Conference on European Media Law, which will be in Trier and online on 7 and 8 May 2026.

In its 2026 Work Programme, the European Commission announced a revision of a key legislative instrument in EU audiovisual policy aimed at updating the rules to ensure fair competition in the media sector and reviewing the regulatory framework governing audiovisual media markets.

Against this evolving policy landscape, ERA’s conference will provide a timely platform to discuss the first insights emerging from the public consultation on the Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD), which remains open until 1 May 2026.

The conference will open with a keynote address by First Vice-President of the European Parliament, MEP Sabine Verheyen, who will share her perspectives on how the EU legal framework for the media can be modernised in an era increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence and digital technologies.

The topics covered in this year’s edition include:
  • European Media Freedom Act implementation update
  • Evaluation and revision of the AVMSD
  • Safeguarding the integrity of the information space and Democracy Shield
  • Impact of AI on the media
  • Data protection update for the media
  • Recent rulings of the CJEU and ECtHR impacting the media sector
The speakers come from a variety of backgrounds, including: in-house, private practice, public affairs, academia, and EU institutions.

As usual, the IPKat has negotiated a special discount for its readers. IPKat readers are in fact entitled to a 20% discount using the VIP code IPKAT2026ERA at checkout (this discount can be combined with the early bird discount where applicable).
