with news of upcoming events 

With autumnal dress adorning the trees throughout London's parks and the blanket of darkness cloaking the capital an hour earlier, spooky season is in full swing.  And when spooky season is in full swing, it means that IP news and events are heating up.  The AmeriKat is here with a selection of recent goings-on and upcoming events.

AIPPI UK's UKIPO overview on the UK Designs consultation

If the impending deadline of the recently launched UK Designs Consultation is concerning you, do not fear  - you can attend what promises to be an insightful and interactive event organized by the UK Group of AIPPI with the UK IPO in the form of Jeff Lloyd (Deputy Director of Trade Marks and Designs Policy) and Leah Jobling-Purser (Head of Designs Policy).  The blurb states:
"AIPPI UK invites you to a presentation and subsequent Q&A session with the leaders of the UKIPO team who designed and are now running the Designs Consultation. The UKIPO are considering wide-ranging and significant changes to the UK designs framework and changes to copyright law, so views from the professions are important and will have an impact for years to come. Responses to the Consultation are due in by 27 November so this event is timed to inform those who are yet to settle their view and to give attendees an opportunity to ask questions of the UKIPO designs policy leadership whilst preparing their responses.

Those preparing AIPPI UK’s response will all be in attendance."

AIPPI UK's SEP Interim Licence Declaration approach 

The UK National Group of AIPPI has been busy.  On 25 November at 6PM, it is also organizing a panel session on the "UK courts' approach to awarding interim licence declarations in SEP cases".  Organized by Cat Howell (EIP) and this Kat, Myles Jelf (Bristowswill moderate a panel comprising of Mr Justice MellorSarah Abram KC and James Segan KC on IP law's fastest-evolving topic.   Hosted at Bristows, the event - even more timely in the wake of various anti-suit activity between the UK, UPC and German courts - promises the following:  

"...[The panel] will unpack the UK courts’ approach, with insights on the current case law covering the early origins in Panasonic v Xiaomi and Lenovo v Ericsson, the progression in Alcatel v Amazon and the latest developments in Samsung v ZTE.  The panel will also look ahead to how national courts - including the UK, US ITC, India, China, Germany, and the UPC - are shaping global licensing frameworks amid increasingly complex parallel proceedings.  With growing international attention and commentary, this promises to be a timely and thought-provoking conversation."

UNION-IP Christmas Dinner Meeting

Christmas already?  Yes.  UNION-IP is hosting their Christmas Dinner meeting on 18 December at the Bleeding Heart in London from 630PM, with special guest Mark Chacksfield KC.  The blurb states:

ABA Webinar on Protecting Intellectual Property in China

On 19 November, the American Bar Association is hosting a webinar on protecting IP in China where panelists - the authors of IP Protection in China - will share practical insights on IP protection, and cybersecurity. The event also promises to "cover recent Chinese court decisions on copyright protection from AI-generated works, which differ from recent US decisions."   More details here.  

Interim license declaration appeal heard in Samsung v ZTE

The appeal in Samsung v ZTE was heard in the Royal Courts of Justice in London today before Lord Justice Peter Jackson, Lord Justice Arnold and Lord Justice Birss.  For those who enjoy rewatching appellate arguments, you can listen to the arguments and questions from the bench on YouTube here (AM session) and here (PM session).  ZTE appealed the order of Mr Justice Mellor granting a declaration of the terms of an interim FRAND licence (read his decision here).  More reporting from MLex here.
