Deadline extended to register for CIPA Patent Case Law 2025 London

CIPA has extended the deadline to attend its final event of the year to 9 December 2025. Patent Case Law 2025, to be held at the Hallam Conference Centre in London, provides a great opportunity to connect with peers and share in an insightful day exploring key developments in patent case law. Judgement Calls: A Meeting of Minds

On 2 January 2026, CIPA will be hosting an in-person conversation in London with some of the UK's most prominent IP judges about how the world of patent attorneys and the judiciary overlap. The event includes a panel discussion between patent practitioners and judges, including The Rt Hon Lord Justice Birss, as well as opportunities to ask questions and network. Filing and managing PCT applications webinars with WIPO and CIPA

From December 2025, ePCT will be the only way to file PCT applications where the UK Intellectual Property Office is the Receiving Office. CIPA and WIPO are hosting two webinars on 16 and 17 December 2025 to help ePCT users familiarise themselves with the system. After Mio/konektra: originality, infringement, and works of applied art in EU copyright law 

On 9 December 2025, the Swedish Copyright Society will be hosting a webinar to discuss the joined referrals Mio, C-580/23 and konektra, C-795/23, in which the CJEU has been asked fundamental questions of copyright law, including: When is a work of applied art protected? How is originality to be assessed? What is the test to apply to determine infringement? Panellists include our very own IPKat, Eleanora Rosati. Find out more and register here.

2026 UCL Institute of Brand and Innovation Law Privacy Lecture

The University College London (UCL) Institute of Innovation Law invites registration for its 2026 Privacy Lecture. The lecture, titled "Authenticating Hacked and Leaked Data", will be presented by Micah Lee, author of "Hacks, Leaks, and Revelations". Find out more and register here for online or in person attendance at the UCL's Faculty of Laws.

ALAI Congress 2026 

The Association Littéraire et Artistique Internationale (ALAI) will be holding its 2026 Congress in the Hague from 17-19 June 2026. The theme of the event is "Copyright and Free Expression in the Age of Algorithms", which will explore how to preserve room for free expression while ensuring that the economic and moral rights of creators remain respected. New EU protection system of geographical indications for craft and industrial products

This week, the EUIPO issued a press release indicating that the EU has created a new regulatory system for protecting the names of craft and industrial products, the quality, reputation or other characteristics of which are attributable to their geographical origin. The EUIPO opened applications for the registration of the names of Craft and Industrial products as Geographical Indications (CIGIs) on 1 December 2025. Find out more here.

US Supreme Court blocks Trump's attempts to remove director of the US Copyright Office

Following attempts in May 2025 by US President Donald Trump to remove Shira Perlmutter from her role as Director of the Copyright Office, the US Supreme Court denied President Trump's request on 25 November 2025. The Supreme Court intends to revisit the matter after considering two related cases calling into question President Trump's executive powers to remove the Commissioner of the Federal Trade Commission and the Governor of the Federal Reserve. UK House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee "AI and Copyright" inquiry

On 25 November 2025, the UK House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee heard oral evidence as part of its "AI and copyright" inquiry. As the UK considers reforming its copyright law to facilitate unlicensed AI training, IPKat Eleanora Rosati shared her views on a potential reform of the national TDM exception (section 29A CDPA), which the UK derived from Article 5(3)(a) of the EU InfoSoc Directive in 2014. Call for Papers: 2026 ISHTIP 17th Annual Workshop

The International Society for the History and Theory of Intellectual Property (ISHTIP) is calling for papers for its 17th Annual Workshop, to be hosted by the Faculty of Law, University of São Paulo, Brazil on 25-26 June 2026. This workshop will focus on the relationship between intellectual property and democracy. Proposals for papers on this issue must be submitted by 22 December 2025, with full papers to be submitted by 15 May 2026. Find out more here.

Call for Papers for the 2026 ATRIP Brazil Congress

São Paulo appears to be the flavour of the week, with Teaching and Research in Intellectual Property (ATRIP) also calling for papers for its 44th Annual Congress, to be held from 28 June to 1 July 2026 at the University of São Paulo. Proposals for papers relating to the theme of "Intellectual Property and Politics: From Power Relations to Realpolitik" must be submitted by 6 February 2026. Find out more here.
