CodeFest 2026 on patent and IP portfolio (e)valuation

A Kat making a note of the
forthcoming events in her diary!
The European Patent Office is running “CodeFest 2026”, which will explore how code-based solutions can be used to assess the value of patents and IP portfolios. They ask contestants to create an automated system that uses data analytics to assess patent value. Interested patent professionals, IT and AI specialists, economists, legal and IP experts can submit their proposals by 16 November 2025. The top three proposals will be recognised at the prize ceremony in May 2026. More details, eligibility criteria, and information on registration can be found here.

Funded PhD opportunity in Australia and Scotland

The University of St Andrews and Macquarie University are offering a funded doctoral research position for an exceptional student with a background in law or computer science (or both!) to design a project under the overarching theme “AI and Copyright Law: The Problem of Authorship”. The accepted student will be studying both in Australia and Scotland under the supervision of Dr Daniela Simone and Dr Tristan Henderson, who are happy to answer informal enquiries via email. Expressions of interest should be submitted by 3 December 2025. Further information here.

ATRIP 2025 essay competition

It’s that time of the year! ATRIP announced the launch of its annual essay competition for young IP researchers. As always, the essays need to be between 5,000 and 10,000 words, can be on any topic related to IP, and should be submitted by 6 February 2026. The top three essays will have the chance to be published either in the Journal of World Intellectual Property Law or IIC, while the winner will be invited to the ATRIP international annual conference to present their essay between 28 June and 1 July 2026, at the University of São Paulo, Brazil. More information on the submission procedure and eligibility criteria can be found here.
