Hi all,

I'm writing a simple webapp which uses geolocation. However after
calling it from the body tag and I sequentially plot the position
using google maps api the accuracy is frequently quite poor. Is there
something I'm missing? I know on the iPhone google map app the
accuracy of the pulsing blue dot seems to improve over a 10-20 seconds
period?

Do I need to make multiple calls to geolocation perhaps?

Many thanks!

Yeap i tested it also, putting the geolocalisation result on a google maps.
The localisation was 6km from where i was, so i start the Maps app ... which locate me at 12km from where i was !!

Can't tell if it's a GPS problem, iphone specific problem, HTML5 geolocalisation issue ...

Depends how you are calling it. Are you watching the position object
so it fires everytime the gps gets a new location?

From the spec "The API itself is agnostic of the underlying location
information sources." meaning it will work with what it has available.
On the iPhone it'll use GPS, Cell Tower Triangulation and/or IP
address. If you results aren't great it may not be using the GPS and
falling back to one of the other options.

I wrote an article and did a demo on using the geolocation api on the
iPhone. http://www.thecssninja.com/javascript/geolocation-iphone, I
get very accurate results when using it outside with a clear view of
the sky.

Made some test again, and it's a bit more accurate ... but like Ryan says, it definitely needs an outside clear sky use.
try it here http://www.remi-grumeau.com/iphone/geolocalisation_test.php
(simple HTML5 geolocalisation use and put back onto a Google Maps API)

I've had the same issue of poor accuracy. I think it is much more
accurate on the iPhone 3Gs. Anybody know if there is a way to make the
phone use only the GPS and not other means of getting location?

This is my first post on this group. I spent some time reading around.
I hope I can contribute - I certainly have a lot of questions :)!

Cheers!

Have you tried testing it with another service besides gmaps? Just curious, it could be Google Maps.

Sure, i thought the same first ... and then i refresh the page two or three times.
On the first run, it's always a dozen meters away, first refresh too. But from the second one, it's a couple of inch accurate !

Check by yourself on this previous example.
Strange behavior btw ...

I'll try to do so with a Bing! map and Yahoo! too

It may be useful to look at the timestamp associated with the
location. It will tell you when that location was fixed. When inside,
I have seen it go to several days old.
