hi,

I don't follow why iOS devices such as iPhone 3GS don't receive Gyroscope related events. Google Maps on my 3GS has Directional Detection. Anyone have an idea, or am I wrong somewhere?

I haven't gotten around to testing it yet. I just found that fact stated.

I'm pretty sure that the 3GS doesn't have a gyroscope. It's new on the i4 and the ipt4.

Then how does Google Maps figure out which way I'm facing?

On my 3GS specifically is what I meant.

It's got a 3-axis magnetometer in it.

Is that the accelerometer you are talking about? Is there a way to figure out your facing direction? Cause I would love that. As far as I can tell, there is no way of detecting which way an iPhone is facing relative to due North. Yet Google Maps seems to be able to.

Ah, never mind. Finally found it in the specs. Digital Compass is the magentometer you were talking about. Which is not exposed to Mobile Safari. Damn.

Hi,

GoogleMaps may use the direction property provided by the Geolocation
API but this information is only available while moving (because you
at least 2 points to find a direction of course)
