How to create a grid view as in photo album

I imagine the simplest solution would be a table view with a custom
cell containing a row of views/controls.

If you plan on having it resize or reorder then things would get a
little complicated to implement. For display-only purposes, a simple
custom table cell plus an appropriately exposed data source should be
all it takes.
