My-Cast weather on the app store

I spent a good chunk of last year helping write a weather app, and it's finally available! Will you trust a completely biased observer if I say it's the best weather app on the app store? It's the best weather app on the app store, hands down. It's clear and data-rich, the maps are pannable & pinchable just like Google Maps and they go full-screen when you turn them sideways, and there are NO ADS. I'm proud of our work.

Thanks to everybody on the list whose answers to questions were tremendously helpful in building this thing. There were surprisingly many big technical challenges. Getting the maps to work right was a real triumph! To implement all the behaviors we wanted, we had to go 100% custom code — no MapKit!

It's of less general public interest, but I should mention that we also did an app that does weather specialized for airplane pilots:

It's meant for flight _planning_ purposes, so I'm a little alarmed that a few reviewers complained that it doesn't work in airplane mode! Just what are they doing up there with their iPhones?

Tab bar icons are just UIImages, and the API for changing them is straightforward. I'll see if I can get permission from DCI to create a tutorial for Mobile Orchard.

Digital Cyclone is an independent company, founded in MN, and bought a couple of years ago by Garmin. They work closely with Garmin on some stuff, but are still largely independent. All the development & design on this app was local.

Please try it out, and spread the word if you like it! We're trying to unseat some pretty well-entrenched market players, and despite the "Garmin" name, we're still very much the little guys versus The Weather Channel.
