Dear Global Faculty

Building the Largest Research Methods Library at the Library of Alexandria?

We are sending this to you as we identified you as someone potentially interested in Global Health and Science. If you would like to unsubscribe from future mailing, send to us an email that has unsubscribe in the Subject heading. We hate to lose you in this global effort.
Here we discuss building of one of the largest book and virtual research library, and a fantastic meeting at the Library of Alexandria.

“I cannot live without books” (T. Jefferson)
About 2 weeks ago Mary Shann from Boston University contacted me. She indicated that she had 2000 books on research methods and statistics, and wanted to donate these.  I had never thought of building a book library, but all of a sudden it made considerable sense to establish a research methods book library at the Library of Alexandria, in addition to our virtual research methods library of Alexandria. Our virtual library is one of the largest collections in the world. We thought that it would be wonderful to also have a book collection. We talked with the head of the library of Alexandria, Ismail Serageldin, and he was keen in establishing a large research methods library.

“The library was the place I went to find out what there was to know. It was absolutely essential” (Smith)

I sent a note out to members of the American Statistical Association, and received very positive responses. Fifty Two statistical experts agreed to donate their books to the library of Alexandria.  We are now setting out the procedures for this to occur.  In the next few weeks we will have a drop location in Boston. From here the Library of Alexandria will send these to Egypt.

Look up from your computer to your bookshelf.  How many of your research books have not been opened in 5 years?.  Others in Africa or Arab countries could use this.  When I retired two years ago, I had books that I had not looked at in 30 years, foolishly I purged 80% of the research methods books which are sadly in some land fill. Don’t let your books end up polluting a land fill. Wouldn’t it be great for your books to be “reborn” to teach in Arab and African countries.

Last week Vint Cerf, Ismail Serageldin, Faina Linkov and I presented the AAAS meeting. AAAS is perhaps the most important scientific meeting in the United States.  Dr Serageldin and I had important presentations about the history of the library of Alexandria, and how this evolved into the Library of Alexandria Africa.  Dr. Cerf presented a very important discussion of the Digital Dark age, where our data after a few years cannot be reached due to changing technology. Dr. Linkov over viewed the data of where we are and where we are going. Before the meeting we reached 750,000 scientists world wide, and we plan to reach all 2.1 million.  We talked with leaders in Statistics without Bordershttp://community.amstat.org/statisticswithoutborders/home. They are a very impressive group working to get statistical experts involved with researchers. We are very complimentary as we are working to bring the scientists to the statistical experts. We can have a major impact working together

BIovision 2016
We would love for you all to come to Biovision 2016 http://www.bibalex.org/bva2016/home/home.aspx
This is an exciting interdisciplinary meeting where you can talk and hear with scientists in many different disciplines.  We also will have a very important session on building research capacity in in Arab and African Countries.

Best Regards
