Dear PhD and Early Career Researchers,
The SPERI Doctoral Researchers Network is delighted to share the call for papers for our upcoming third annual conference titled 'Breakdown: critical political economy in global disorder.'
As part of the Sheffield Political Economy Research Institute, the Doctoral Researchers Network is an interdisciplinary network of PhD and early career scholars interested in the field of political economy. For the last two years, we have run an annual conference
on critical political economy for post-graduate and early career researchers - offering a space to explore emerging themes within the field, receive feedback from peers and senior academics, and foster networks to support our academic community.
This year, our conference focuses on the cascading waves of disorder and disruption engulfing global capitalism. The last year has seen a breakdown in the global order with aggressive wars, old and new, energy crises,
political upsets, ascendant nationalism all unfolding against the planetary canvas of climate and ecological breakdown.
We see critical political economy as crucial to understanding this current conjuncture and helping us identify openings for alternative political projects within
it. We thus invite PhD researchers and ECRs to submit proposals for presentations sharing political economy responses to the many sites of ‘breakdown’ today.
The conference will be an all day event, and take place on the
14th September 2026 at the
University of Sheffield's Wave Building. You can submit an abstract of no more than 250 words
here.
The deadline for submitting an application is
Sunday 24 May at 5pm.
Please see further details in the full call for papers attached below, and if you have any further questions then please don't hesitate to get in touch with either myself or any other of the DRN co-convenors.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, and we look forward to hearing from you soon.
Best wishes,
The SPERI DRN team
