Hello
I have a hobbyist Asterisk setup at home and I'd like the ability to call Bogota, Columbia for as low a cost as possible (i.e. Free). The calls are personal and may happen once a week. I do have a local SIP number registered to my PBX (Barrie, Ontario, Canada). FreeNum.org caught my eye and I wonder if it would work from Bogota? Has anyone tried it from there? What about dialing from Barrie to Bogota? The Bogota number would be PSTN (land or cell - not sure). I'm not interested in paying for a SIP service as I don't think the call volume is high enough to warrant a SIP trunk. Currently our bills are about $25 per month and so there isn't anything gained by moving to the Asterisk box except knowledge and activation of the "Follow Me" feature so we can receive calls while away from the house. It would be neat to set up.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Michael

Hi Michael,

Freenum.org is only a lookup service, it won't save any money or be used for calls. I would looking to the Skype pricing, or for SIPn Callcentric offers a free DID plus a per minute outgoing. OnSIP.com also offers per minute outgoing I think, and many other companies do. It's a matter of checking the prices.

I deal with Colombia calling quite a bit. Since you have asterisk at
home, there's a couple of ways around it...

For people you call often, I'd recommend an ATA/Sip Phone/etc registered
to your pbx. This of course would be extension to extension... so free.
You could even play with webrtc on this, making video calls as well.

Flowroute to Colombia (Bogota especially) is very well priced. They're
who we use here.

We also have a Bogota DID from DIDWW for $15/month. This allows
unlimited inbound calling to our system. Especially helpful for people
calling to you.
