Subject: Invitation: Des Moines java Script User Group, Tues. Sept. 10th

To the DM Technology group:

Dice Holdings is pleased to be sponsoring (and hosting) the September meeting of the Des Moines JavaScript Users group on Tuesday, Sept. 10th 2013.  We'd like to invite (and encourage!) any Dice employees to attend and  participate.  The meeting will be held in the front conference rooms and will be open to the Des Moines technical community to attend.

A little background about the group: The Des Moines JavaScript Users group has been a "group within other groups", providing content to meetings of other technology user groups around the area, like the Des Moines WebGeeks, the Central Iowa Java Users Group (CIJUG), the Iowa Ruby Brigade, Pyowa and likely many others.  This meeting at Dice will be the first 'standalone' meeting they've held as a group – partially due to scheduling conflicts with CIJUG meetings at the Meredith offices downtown.  We'll be inviting other user groups to attend as well.

The focus of Des Moines JS is "front end" development and JavaScript technologies that make the web a richer and more interesting experience. The organizer (Toran Billups) also has some outstanding contributions to the EmberJS community and has been speaking at a number of groups about Ember and JavaScript in general.    You can find out more about the group at their homepage (http://dsmjs.com) or through their Twitter account (@desmoinesjs)

About The Meeting

One of the reasons we offered to have Dice host is because I'm one of the speakers for September!  Toran contacted me last spring and scheduled me to speak on the GitHub ecosphere and how to get started both contributing and creating your own open source projects.  I'll be talking about experiences in contributing to large projects (in my short stint as an O'Reilly author), contributing to smaller projects and maintaining a small open source project with contributors (http://vagrantpress.org).  Here's my 'official' abstract to the group:

## Biography

Chad Thompson is a DevOps Engineer with Dice Holdings, Inc. in Urbandale.  Chad has enjoyed a great career in creating and helping others create great technology as a developer, architect and consultant.  Chad has served as organizer of the Central Iowa Java Users Group (CIJUG), is currently a Senior Contributing Editor to the Independent Oracle Users Group (IOUG) SELECT Journal and has enjoyed the pleasure of speaking to a variety of audiences on technology topics.  You can follow Chad on Twitter (@chadothompson) or read some of his writings at http://chadthompson.me

## Abstract

If you've been attending user group meetings, or just had someone forward you a GitHub URL - you've seen some of the things that developers have been doing in the Open Source community.  In this session, I'll talk about open source development, the GitHub ecosphere and how you can get involved.  Along the way, we'll share some success stories (and not so successful stories) about getting involved in the community, how you can make positive contributions and what to expect when you start your own open source project.

Following that, Toran will present a talk on how to incorporate JavaScript promises for better web application performance.  (See a quick description here: http://martinfowler.com/bliki/JavascriptPromise.html )

The "official" biographies and abstracts will be up soon on http://dsmjs.com

Feel free to ask myself or Tom Bonney about the group, and we look forward to seeing you there!

Chad
