Some of the programs I work with allow young adults, high schoolers,
to be mentors. I am wondering about doing proper screening procedures
for them. What kind of screening and background checks do other
programs do for young adult mentors?

We have a High School Bigs program in which High School students serve as the Bigs in a school based program. We do not allow anyone under 18 to be a mentor in our community based program. We require the same application, interview and training as all of our mentors - but can't do background checks. We ask for a reference from an adult at school and have them sign a form telling us if they have ever or are currently receiving treatment for drugs or alcohol. Hope this helps.

We also contact the JCO in the county to see if they have a record. Plus 2
references... one from school. Parents also sign a permission form.
